Too much fluid?

I am 32+4 and have been to midwife today and measured 35 weeks. She therefore is sending me for a scan tomorrow as she thinks I have too much fluid. Has anyone had this problem and if so, was everything ok? I am concerned there could be a problem with the baby. Thanks.

I had it, proper name is polyhydramnious. Problem can occur when/if your waters go with a gush and you suffer a cord prolapse.

They tried to induce me so labour would start in a controlled environment, didn't work and ended with section.

IME, sometimes, midwives seem to like to scare you I think it is all about covering their arses in case of litigation

you are measuring 2 1/2 weeks approx, bigger than you should....fundal height can be a bit of a guestimate....there is a difference between measuring a bit bigger, and having a bit more fluid, than polyhdramnios...which can be dangerous...and lead to prem labour and cord prolapse...

i really think, on balance, that even if you do have a bit too much fluid, it is probably within the bounds of what is normal, rather thatn anything to worry about..

is it the same midwife who you saw today as you have seen all the way through?

Hi thanks for replying. Had scan today and they have confirmed polyhydramnious. Got to have loads more checks over the next week and then they will see how I go. Fingers crossed I won't get more fluid! . I hope not to be induced but nothing you can do if needs must.

I also had this. Was not induced and had DD on time. Was abit scary knowing you could go into early labour. I felt out of breath quickly and looked huge. The fluid sorted itself out by 37 weeks. Easy to say but try not to worry you could be like me and everything will go back to normal. Good luck

No. The day before I was 38 weeks we couldn't get any response from the baby at all. Not even the tried and tested and always worked things. Went to hospital and monitored for about 10 min. Was due at hospital the next afternoon for blood tests for suspected OC and a scan(due to size) and told to come in earlier to be monitored. While on monitor the read out said I was having contractions and the heartbeat was dropping each time. I felt nothing, was 1cm dilated and told to buzz if the heart rate went below a certain number. After a while we stopped buzzing as it constantly did it. Eventually went for a scan which lasted about 5 mins and then escorted back to the ward. Led to believe all was ok but prepped for a c-section just in case. Baby born at 7.01pm. Turned out the heart rate dropping was bad and the sonographer had picked up a prob on the scan. We were still oblivious to all this and for 3 days I thought the docs had done me a favour by giving me a section. Baby was born flat on delievery and had to be stimulated to breathe. Turned out he wouldn't have survived a natural delivery. He had something else wrong and had to have an x-ray very early on but he is now 6 and the healthiest boy I know. Funny how the day befores notes went missing too.

Oh dear NAB thank god everything was ok. I think you are probably the extreme though and what happened to you is rare. Just shows how things can go so wrong.

I had this too with second pregnancy and diagnosed at 36 weeks. Unfortunately I then had to stay in hospital until my dd's birth by c-section at 39 weeks. As everyone has said the danger is the possibility of cord prolapse although I was hoping for a natural delivery until 38 weeks when they booked me for a section because of 'unstable lie', I had various scans and each one she was in a different position, they couldn't palpate as I was so huge and I couldn't feel any of the tightenings that showed on the monitor. I was only then booked for a secton as I had one with ds.

Hi, I had severe polyhydramnios. At 36 weeks I measured 43 I had a scan at 28 weeks due to my size as I was ginormous - this was when it was diagnosed and then had another at 32, 35 and 36 weeks. I was under a consultant who planned to induce me at 38 weeks due to my size and the danger due to the excess fluid. On my first day of mat leave (36 + 5) my waters went at 7.30 am and boy, did they go apparently I had about 3 litres of fluid . Because he was early, once my waters had gone, my body refused to go into labour, despite inducing and I had an emergency c-section on the Wednesday. DS is just fine and dandy, he was a big lad for his age - 7lb 15oz at 37 weeks exactly, so that also contributed to my size.

does anyone know if you've had polyhydramnious once are you likely to have it in subsequent pregnancies? As i've said, I had it with second pregnancy but also had lots of excess fluid with my first.
