Early labour, advice please!

Hi guys,

FTM here and completely clueless. I’m 38+1 and went to the hospital yesterday due to not feeling any movements from baby in over a day. Baby was fine thankfully but the monitor was picking up regular contractions. The midwife examined me and said that I’m 1cm dilated and in early labour. She did a ‘slight sweep’ not sure how that compares to a normal sweep.

I’ve been having period pains on and off for weeks and yesterday was no different, I was in some discomfort but not enough to think that I was in early labour. The pains got worse when I got home from the hospital but died down again, I managed to sleep through the night minus the usual pee breaks, today I’ve been getting the pains on and off but nothing major, some lower back pain but again nothing consistent.

I’m feeling a bit disheartened as from what the midwife said yesterday, I expected things to have picked up by now. Is this normal for early labour and if so does anyone know how long this can last? I read online somewhere that this could go on for 2 weeks and I just don’t think I’m mentally prepared for the wait! Anyone with any experience with this, advice would be really appreciated, also any tips on speeding up the process!

Thanks

I had them for about two weeks too but on and off. I just spent a few hours each day on my ball and a little bit of walking. I gave birthday last week, 1 week early. I am so pleased she was early as I couldn't wait any longer either! It may not have sped anything up as I am a FTM but so many people say to keep moving.
