Hi everyone,

So after a very long year i'm so excited that I got my BFP over Easter. Really didn't think it was going to happen naturally so I am over the moon!

Just wanted to find out about calculating how many weeks as i'm slightly confused. On all the online calculators it is saying I am 4 weeks pregnant even though I know ovulation/fertilization must have happened just over 2 weeks ago. So do they basically count the weeks by the first day of last period?

I really want to get a scan done before my OH goes away (in 3-4 weeks). I know they say you can detect a heartbeat on the scan around 5-6 weeks so I want to make sure I'm calculating how far along I am correctly before I get a scan done.

Congratulations, yeah those dates are right. Your 2 weeks pregnant when you ovulate I have no idea why but that's how it's counted and calculated haha. So if you conceived 2 weeks ago your actually 4 weeks pregnant x

misper · 23/04/2019 10:32

It's confusing isn't it? Yes if it was 2 weeks since conception you're what is termed as 4 weeks pregnant. All dating goes from the date of the last period. Hence it's impossible to be 'two weeks pregnant' in that terminology iyswim.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 23/04/2019 10:33

Congratulations. Yes, pregnancy is dated from the first day of the last period, until you have your dating scan at approximately 12 weeks

NannyPear · 23/04/2019 10:33

Congratulations!!

Yes you're right, they calculate it from the start of your last period. This date can change at the 12 week dating scan which will be your "official" due date, but will still be around 2 weeks before you ovulated.

So, if you are looking to book an early scan for, say, 7 weeks pregnant, you would want to date it for 5 weeks after you ovulated.

PrayingandHoping · 23/04/2019 10:37

Not heard of anyone hearing a heartbeat at 5 weeks. The earliest I've heard of is sometimes at 6 weeks but best to wait until 7 weeks

Congratulations!

BobbySD345 · 23/04/2019 11:17

Congrats !! So exciting isn't it. I had a scan at just gone 6 weeks at the hospital because I'm under a specialist unit and we saw the heartbeat flickering away even though the embryo was only around 2mm !

I think it is common for you not to see a flicker until 7 weeks though so don't be too disheartened if you go earlier and don't see anything x

liveinhope100 · 23/04/2019 11:23

Aww thank you everyone for all your responses, really appreciate it :)

Atleast I'm, 2 weeks ahead of what i thought haha - so exciting!! xx

@BobbySD345 Congratulations!! That's so amazing. Good luck with your journey! I really want to get a scan done at around 7 weeks but yeah I don't want to be upset if I don't see a flicker.

Feel so anxious at the moment... think I will relax once I have my first scan. I remember a few years ago I got a BFP and then came on two weeks later - i'm guessing it was a chemical. Just going to try and not worry too much and pray all goes well.

First day of pregnancy is first day of your last period. So yes all makes sense!

codenameduchess · 23/04/2019 13:57

First day of last period is day 1 for counting pregnancy. Not many women know when they ovulate so it's the easiest way to date before the dating scan.

I had a scan at 5+2 after some bleeding and saw a heartbeat... but be prepared that there's not a lot to see- the heartbeat is a small flicker if it can be seen and theres no baby to see as such.

Mrsmummy90 · 23/04/2019 14:09

Congratulations!!
