Healthy weight loss during pregnancy

I’m 21 weeks pregnant and my BMI before pregnancy was 30 (and about 2 stone from my goal weight which would put me in the healthy category). So far, I’ve put on 3lbs this pregnancy but I’m keen to try and lose some weight - has anyone managed to do this during their pregnancy through excercise and healthier eating habits?

Hey - I have been searching for the same answer! I think the consensus is that you need to eat a healthy diet and then if you're already exercising continue to do that and if you have weight to lose it should come off? Let me know if you find anything out xxx

Your midwife / GP should be able to advise but as long as you don’t calorie restrict or increase excercise significantly then you should be fine.

You might find by naturally cutting out caffeinated drinks, and being more conscious you’ll drop weight anyway. Increase your walking and swimming (low impact excercise) which will help with labour and keeping you mobile towards the 39 week mark.

I lost a dramatic amount at the start so ended up in labour at my pre-pregnancy weight. Which I still am (FFS)...

As you are only borderline obese it will probably be safer for you to maintain your weight. Weight loss during pregnancy is only recommended for women who are morbidly obese.

I was obese and lost 11kg during pregnancy moving my BMI to normal. Would recommend the diabetes diet, lots of cheese, nuts and eggs, only one carb per meal.

I’m currently very upset having just realised that I’ve gone from a sz 10 to 16 in 2 years
Now probably isn’t the best time to try but I feel I need to do something

I'm hoping to lose weight by cutting out junk, eating clean and swimming/walking. I'm not going to cut calories etc, just change what I eat.

In these early stages I'm going to aim to have eggs for breakfast, a decent salad for lunch and meat/fish with veg/salad for dinner. Snacks will be cheese/nuts.

If don't lose weight, I'll at least be healthier.

My first trimester was so carb heavy (everything else made me feel so nauseous!) so glad to be able to eat a bit more healthily now. @Lenny1987, really great that you were able to lose 11kg during pregnancy and thanks to everyone for all the helpful tips. I’m going to aim to walk more and take up swimming! I’ll let you know how I get on!...

As Lenny1987 posted, currently 38 weeks pregnant, lost 8 kg so far following a low blood sugar/ carb diet as I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Eating well, cutting sugar etc, increased my walks, carried on spinning and upped my swimming. I hadn't put any weight on either since my booking appointment.

If you are looking to follow something, slimming world can be followed during pregnancy. Ask your gp or midwife.

One thing that might also help is doing some gentle body-weight exercises to build a bit of muscle, e.g. plie squats, regular squats, lunges, etc. Main thing is to do them slowly enough that you can do them with good form, but they are all safe for pregnancy if you take it gently. Plus you can carry on once the baby is born (I used to do lots of plies while burping my daughter).

Having first dating scan but gp thinks I'm 14 weeks pregnant. ( was told I was pregnant during a MRI scan).

During those 14 weeks I have lost 1 1/2 st. I go to slimming world. As an obese mum to be midwife very happy to let me carry on as its healthy eating not restricting any important food groups.

My weight loss has slowed but because I'm in habit of eating better I feel healthier.

Try the planetary diet to the right proportions and gentle daily exercise and the right amount will come off.
