Early pregnancy and IBS

Hi everyone,

I am 4+5 weeks pregnant so very early but I have been really struggling with the gastric side effects.
I was diagnosed with IBS about 3 years ago and have had my ups and downs from it but have been virtually symptom free for around 4 months (incidentally since stopping the pill!)
Since finding out last week I was pregnant I have definitely been more constipated but over the last two days the pain, although intermittent, has been awful. I have been managing to opening my bowels every 2/3 days but the spasming and pain has been terrible as I said.
This is my first pregnancy so I don't have anything to compare to but I have been conceived I'm miscarrying due to the pain. (I've had absolutely no bleeding and tests continue to be getting darker).
My GP surgery has no appointments for 2 weeks (!!) so I was wondering if anyone has been through this and has any advice.
My next step is prune juice although I don't know how much to drink etc.

Thanks to anyone who has read this!

Awww that sounds painful. Definitely ring your doctor and try get an emergency appointment or tell them the circumstances?

Although if it makes you feel any better I've had really bad IBS for about 4 years now and been on medication for such bad painful constipation... but I can honestly say that since being pregnant I've been medication free and going to the toilet like a normal person if not more! It's actually a miracle :)

This didn't start straight away for me though maybe about week 10+ or so is when I started going regularly :) good luck with it.

I'm 6 weeks and my ibs has been pretty bad the last few weeks. Pregnancy slows down digestion and can cause constipation anyway so add ibs to that and it's not great.

I was diagnosed with ibs about a year ago after 8 months of the most horrific pain (so bad I passed out from it). First pregnancy was 4 years ago so didn't have it back then. Been mostly under control with medication i take when I feel it starting but good god the last few weeks every 2-3 days im on the toilet for 30 minutes crying.

I'm trying to eat a high fibre diet and avoid inflammatory foods (although not much is staying down right now!). Dairy and spicy foods are triggers for me, but plenty of leafy greens and whole foods and exercising as often as I can as that seems to help.

Definitely try for an emergency appointment with your gp, good luck op!

I suffer from lbs and ulcerative colitis. I was unaware of pregnancy until very recently. I assumed I was having a flare up. I find drinking alot of water good for constipation. Excersise too even if walking.
