Do people who have done NCT think they were worth it? Or would a private class that talks more about the realities of childbirth etc. be better?

The positive birth company has an online digital pack, it's about £40 but 100% worth it in my and my husbands opinion. it's so amazing for whatever kind of birth your considering and you don't even need to leave the house :)

It totally depends on what you are hoping to get out of it. For me NCT was totally worth it for the friendship aspect of it. The information was useful but I imagine I would have got equally as useful information at another antenatal class. I was very lucky and clicked with the people in our group and found the social support this gave invaluable, particularly in the early weeks. I appreciate though not everyone has this experience.

Same as above - Positive Birthing Company digital pack is amazing. We also did the free weekend classes our hospital offered and that was great for the tour and meeting the breastfeeding homestart team and midwives etc.

As others have said NCT was great for making friends. Personally however I did not feel it prepared me for the realities of birth and feeding in the early weeks. It's all down to the opinions and skill of teaching that your particular NCT teacher has (same for any other course I guess). However, keep in mind that NCT is heavily focused on breastfeeding and natural birth so may not go in depth enough on other paths if this isn't your plan/doesn't work out for you.
My personal recommendation is to do a course like NCT to get an overview/make friends and then do your own reading/research and talk with your midwife to make sure you feel well informed on ALL types of birth/feeding.
