Heartbeat but measuring behind

Hi there, I need some reassurance. I just had an early scan and according to my last period the baby should have been measuring 7w4d but I was told it's only 6w3d which is over a week behind. The good thing was they saw a heartbeat though.

This is my 4th pregnancy (1st successful, 2nd molar and 3rd miscarriage) so I'm obviously super stressed, especially that the ultrasonographer said this is a 50/50 situation! I have another scan booked in nealry 2 weeks but wondered what your experience has been? I have no bleeding, no cramps, the usual early pregnancy symptoms such as sickness, sensitive sense of smell, tender breasts etc. Thanks!

Could it be possible you just ovulated a little later in your cycle?

PrayingandHoping · 15/04/2019 17:29

You prob just ovulated late. I wouldn't really worry about. Dating at that stage can also not be accurate (mines a ivf baby so no doubt on dates and at my 7 week scan it "measured" 4 days behind. Had caught up up 9 weeks)

The heartbeat is the important thing. Don't worry xx

I would agree with previous posters that it's most likely that you ovulated later in your cycle. Going by my lmp I should be 9 days ahead of where I am but as I chart I know when I ovulated give it take a day or two. My early scan measured the baby to be spot on my estimated due date then my 12 week scan measured me to be 4 days ahead 🤷🏼‍♀️. Scans in my experience aren't overly reliable so I would try not to worry about it - easier said than done I know.
Wishing you all the best for the rest of your pregnancy. 😊

I’m the same as you. I have another scan Friday that I’ve had to book privately as EPAU didn’t ask me to go back, even though they said I was less then 6 weeks but we too had a heartbeat. It’s left me in a right state and googling everything but I’m hoping I ovulated late x

kashka81 · 15/04/2019 20:01

I didn’t ovulate late, my cycle is only 26 days so if anything I must have ovulated a day or so earlier. I guess I’ll just have to wait, which is nerve wracking but there’s nothing else I can do...

I measured a week behind at my early scan last pregnancy and caught up my dates at 12 weeks! They had to bring my scan forward because I was closer to 13 than 11 they told me it's perfectly normal because they measuring something soooooo small that it's not easy to get an accurate measurement until the 12 week mark which is why that period is used for dating.

I'm also measuring a week behind this time and again the sonography right said it's totally normal nothing to concern her at all with the scan. It's very normal to be working 7 days of your date either side. she said most likely I'll catch up again. She also pointed all all
Pregnancies develop at different rates! I've had heartbeats at 5/6 weeks every time in my successful ones and been able to see things abdominally but a friend didn't get a heartbeat until 7 weeks

bobble53 · 16/04/2019 07:52

@Mintypea5 that’s nice to hear. My sonographer and nurse weren’t concerned either and said just to take the details to my booking in appointment so I’m hoping that’s a positive and everything is ok. X

Just wanted to add that if you’re not sure about when you ovulated, it’s possible you did ovulate late and that you have a short luteal phase.

Teddybear45 · 16/04/2019 11:23

These things vary. Even IVF pregnancies can measure behind but be healthy. Don’t stress. Whatever happens in 2 weeks will happen regardless of you worrying about it.

UPDATE : I had my scan yesterday and was told there’s no heartbeat. Sadly my body hasn’t recognised what’s happened so I’m booked in for a surgery this Monday. Needless to say I’m totally heartbroken, devastated, I don’t want to have to go through this anymore. I’m done...

kashka81 so sorry to hear your update. I didn't want to post before as the same thing happened to me. I was very clear on my dates and they measured me behind and I knew it wasn't possible. I was measuring 10 weeks when I should have been 13 and my little ones heartbeat couldn't be found at 21 weeks and had passed many weeks before. Hugs from me

ducksandacorns · 25/04/2019 18:22

@kashka81 so sorry to read this. Like @aweedropofsancerre I didn't want to post and worry you as the same happened to me - measured 2 weeks behind at early scan with a heart beat and then no heartbeat at scan two weeks later. I had surgery under general anaesthetic. You will get through this as awful as it is Thanks
