Early pregnancy tiredness - anything I can eat/do to help??

I've just discovered I'm pregnant with number 2, am literally just 6-7 weeks pregnant.
With my first I was so lucky, not sick at all, but I did have terrible bouts of tiredness for about the first couple of months and it seems like I'm having the same this time around. It really hits me like a wave and I feel so groggy I can hardly function. Does anyone know if there are foods to eat which give you more energy (I'm sure there are) or anything else I can do? Perhaps running after a toddler is wearing me out a little too but there's not alot I can do about that!!
Thanks.

Janus and Pamina, you must have sat on the same chair at the London meet-up, pity you didn't see which one it was Jodee!

Ems · 16/08/2002 19:59

Many congratulations ladies, brilliant news, its hot, whoozy, headachey weather even when you're not pregnant!

It just shows how fast time on Mumsnet flies, it only seems the other day that you were about to have Baby1 Pamina!!

Janus · 17/08/2002 09:20

Florenceuk, I'd love the yoga details, will sign up now for about 2 months' time (in the hope we're finally in Wimbledon!), thanks v. much.
Pamina, I'd love to know how the acupuncture goes, had another blinding headache yesterday and now have chronic backache which I've heard acupuncture is very good for too, does it hurt though???!!
Am already thinking about a sober Christmas/New Year/partner's 40th birthday, don't feel like drinking at the moment but come Christmas .....!!

Pamina, brave you, looking at the needles...do hope it works for you.
Bossykate, that is tremendous news about Floradix tablets, I will definitely try them over the liquid. I never minded the taste, it was finding room in the fridge for the ridiculous tall flagon it came in...
Mystic Scum, we are having a special scan at Kings on Thursday. Although they are meant to be just looking at the heart, I am hoping they might also point south and be prepared to tell us some other useful stuff. If you're right, you can have a big drink on me at the next meet-up!

bossykate · 18/08/2002 06:31

hope all well at special scan, marina, good luck.

Here are the yoga details: Annabel Hargreaves, ph 020 82875411. The classes are small (8 people max), she does day and evening classes as well. I thought they were great.

If you have no luck there, the yoga centre in Balham "The art of health and yoga centre" also do a prenatal yoga class: 020 86821800.

Congrats to all sproggers here. Just read it.

There is something in the water as I too have just tested positive 5-6 wks max. Being permanently tired anyway, the haze of total exhaustion hits in earlier in the day now.

Just a word of advice about drinking water, I was told not to have whole glasses in one go as it passes through more quickly than you absorb it but to sip on it throughout the day.

Does anyone else get severely cack-handed in these early weeks. Last time round I crashed my brand new VW 3 times (!!) in the first 10 weeks. HAving never been a careless driver. Last week drove into the barrier at a multistorey parking space, I didn't bat an eyelid or check the damage, just trotted off, very unusual behaviour for me. This was before I knew I was pregnant. My DS says not to bother getting the scratches done until our family is complete.

clucks · 18/08/2002 15:55

Sorry, it was meant to read my DH doesn't want it repaired.

See what I mean, I'm on another planet. Probably ready for a nap, but at work so difficult and it's supposed to be a secret.

CAM, just seen your message - LOL! I'm hoping we drunk the same wine, then!

Marina, all the best for the scan on Thursday, I hope all goes well.

And congrats to you, too, Clucks!

pupuce · 18/08/2002 21:45

Enid - out of curiosity did she mention the accupuncture expression "black blood" ???

Congratulations Clucks

Pamina, I loved having acupuncture, especially with the current. I used to have it when I was about 13, god so many years ago, for my damaged knee and later on for my neck, both times it worked brilliantly.

Enid · 19/08/2002 11:12

Glad to hear your acupuncture experience was a good one Pamina! Electrical current sounds good, I don't have that but she does wiggle them round till they ache slightly to be sure they are in the right position. I have never looked at the needles, you are brave.

Haven't been for a few weeks and got a migraine yesterday - she actually hasnt treated me for migraine since the first 2 sessions so a 20 week spell with none was pretty good. I'm seeing her on Thursday so I'll get her to 'do' my head again.

Pupuce, no, she didnt mention that but she did say first off that I had 'stagnant chi' (thanks!) - a common complaint for mums as they spend a lot of time 'giving' to everyone else and not enough time looking after themselves. Sounds believable to me!

Janus · 21/08/2002 14:36

Pamina and Enid, did you go to a 'regular' acupuncturist (sp?!) or do you have to go to one who specialises in pregnant women?? Have another thumping headache and chronic tiredness and now want to try and book as anything may help.
Good luck with the scan Marina.
Congratulations Clucks, hope your hangs are going well!!
Mystic Scum, I can't confirm yet but will let you know around 5th April!!

Janus, I sympathise. Saw your posting re hitting children and had no real advice I'm afraid - but acupuncture can certainly help with stress levels as well as headaches and tiredness (I say this as someone who burst into tears at my acupuncturists after dd had thrown an impressive wobbly in M&S )

My acupuncturist was just a regular one although I did ask when I made the appointment whether she had had experience with pregnant women. She explained to me that there were certain points that she couldn't use as they aren't recommended in pregnancy, and obviously now I'm getting to the 'Weeble' stage I can't lay on my tummy for treatments so there are a few more that she can't get to very easily.

FYI, I found mine through the Yellow Pages, they have a big box of acupuncturists that have the British Council of Acupuncture accreditation. Mine was also allied with a GP which made me feel more confident about it.

Good luck.

I have only ever had acupuncture for pain, not fatigue etc. As hubby is acupuncturist, it might be worth a try for me, but he hasn't offered (although he got someone pregnant with acupuncture and told her she was before she knew, clever chap when it comes to other people). I am having to take daytime naps which don't increase my energy levels at all, and the supplements have yet to kick in.

clucks · 25/08/2002 13:05

Hi Pamina,

Yes, I am Wimbledon way, although centre court wasn't the car park I demolished. This was in Croydon, so I've got away with it, I think.

percy · 26/08/2002 12:21

Hello. I am in very very early pregnancy with second child (under 6 weeks). I did a test on the day my period was due as have been feeling sick (retching) for 3 weeks now. This seems ridiculously early to be having morning sickness. Also, I can't stop crying all the time. I don't remember feeling like this last time round. Reassurance that I'm not a barn pot would be most welcome.

Oh, and congratulations to all other pregnant mums - I haven't seen the doctor/ midwife yet, but I have calculated a due date of 25 April.

Lollypop · 26/08/2002 21:08

Percy I was really emotional this time around and cried quite a lot in the first few weeks. I'm much better now but I didn't cry much at all last time.

percy · 26/08/2002 21:50

Thanks for your post Lollypop. Out of interest, did you have a boy or girl last time? My SIL said that she was far more emotional when she was pregnant with her daughter than her son.
