Early pregnancy tiredness - anything I can eat/do to help??

I've just discovered I'm pregnant with number 2, am literally just 6-7 weeks pregnant.
With my first I was so lucky, not sick at all, but I did have terrible bouts of tiredness for about the first couple of months and it seems like I'm having the same this time around. It really hits me like a wave and I feel so groggy I can hardly function. Does anyone know if there are foods to eat which give you more energy (I'm sure there are) or anything else I can do? Perhaps running after a toddler is wearing me out a little too but there's not alot I can do about that!!
Thanks.

i also had really bad migraines in the early weeks where i had to simply lie in the dark and sleep. They have subsided now thank goodness as there wasnt anything i could take except paracetamol.I am now 27 weeks and keeping my fingers crossed they dont come back.I found that drinking loads of water really helped with tiredness and headaches in the early weeks, even now i still find that having a couple of glasses of water and a seat for 10 mins can refresh enough to go on for another wee while.

jodee · 14/08/2002 17:42

Pamina, fantastic news! (PS, if it really is something in the water, please tell me what you are drinking!)

bossykate · 14/08/2002 17:49

pamina, congratulations! great news, hope you feel better soon.

Twink · 14/08/2002 18:41

Congrats to both of you (but that's two drinking partners gone on the next London meet-up )

Hope you both start to feel less tired (as mothers of toddlers that seems unlikely !)/ lose the headaches soon.

Love K x

mears · 14/08/2002 19:22

Cool gel eyepads might help (Boots have them). Drug wise anything other than paracetamol is not really recommended. Hope it gets better soon for you.

Marina · 14/08/2002 19:23

FANTASTIC news Pamina! Many congratulations!
Not much advice to add to what I said to Janus about what helped me, but I bet drinking lots of water will help with the headache.

Joe1 · 14/08/2002 19:35

Great news Pamina It seems years ago that I was only 4 weeks, now 33.

Thanks so much everyone for good advice and all the good wishes, I will save this posting to show the little person one day, I'm really touched.
I've had 2 bananas today (a small miracle for my rather low intake, normally, of fruit!), had a sleep at lunch time, about 30 minutes, am taking folic acid (does that contain iron??), still feel pooped!! I have been in bed by 10 for last couple of nights (am usually nearer midnight) so this has helped a bit (not helped by daughter waking, ready for the day, at 5.15am this morning though!!). I felt absolutely dreadful after I woke at lunchtime though, like the worst tiredness ever (I literally stood up and had to sit back down again!) but I think it has helped me get through the afternoon better, so worth it.
Tried Floradix in my first pregnancy but had a REALLY hard time trying to keep the horrible liquid down, I don't suppose they do it in tablet form now do they?
Pamina, congratulations to you! So sorry to hear about the headaches, I suffer with these too, had a horrible one on Sunday which made me grab for the Paracetemol, I try to not take any for as long as I can but in the end it's unbearable and I take 2 but I remember in first pregnancy sometimes taking 3 as the pain was so bad. I know I should drink more water but am glugging orange juice and ribena (suddenly love it!!) just to keep up some sort of fluid levels and I haven't had another one this week yet. We're STILL in the middle of selling our house, waiting to exchange, taking months, getting fed-up, but when I'm finally down there we can compare bumps!!! (I swear my stomach is already going outwards, impossible, must be psychological but it feels like it to me!)
I'll work on all the other good bits of advice, will start yoga once, if!, we move house as did this in first pregnancy and loved it, just a huge thank you to you all.xx

congrats Janus and Pamina!

pamina - i'm a migraine sufferer too and you ahve all my sympathy. first of all, as you know migraine's are v. different from bad headaches - so people should be aware of that when saying they have a migraine (not that i'm saying any of you are - don't jump down my throat!!). Migraines are absolutely disabling, paracetamol may help with the after affects but, to my knoweldge, it can't do a lot for the migraine - only things like migraleve and prescription drugs - none of which you can take while p/g. So Pamina - sorry but i think you have to suffer through it .... the eye patches helps by soothing a bit, and as everyone else says lots of water. P/g can (as it did with me) bring migraines on or increase the frequency of them. I found i had more than usual in the first few weeks after ds was born, so even though i was exclusively b/f i expressed some milk and kept it in the freezer for dh, so that if it did happen when ds needed feeding he could do it while i vomitted my way through a migraine (sorry to be so blunt).

Just to add my congrats to both Pamina and Janus (are you still thinking of shifting Janus?) Hope it all goes well!!!

ScummyMummy · 15/08/2002 16:15

Brilliant news, Janus and Pamina Congratulations, indeed.

Here are The Mystic Scum's predictions:

Enid- boy
Joe1- boy
Emilys- girl
Harrysmum- girl
niksfirstbaby- boy
Marina- boy
Pamina- girl
Janus- boy
Paula1- girl (ok, I'm cheating on this one!)

Ooo, there are loads of you. I bet I've missed some people too. Who else is expecting atm? Do you too want the predictions of The Mystic Scum? No? Are you sure?

nics1stbaby · 15/08/2002 16:27

Hey - I am having a boy! Blimey, I'm impressed.

Enid · 15/08/2002 17:10

Ooh I actually felt nervous when I read that Scummymummy! Am convinced its a girl but dp will be delighted at your predictions - here's a piece of virtual silver for you

Joe1 · 15/08/2002 17:33

Gosh another little man. I have often thought i would have boys but feel this might be a girl, we will wait and see. Must say I am not fussed either way.

Loobie · 15/08/2002 18:39

i am expecting too though not due in 2003,i am 27 weeks-due in Nov and hoping like mad for a wee girl.

florenceuk · 16/08/2002 10:03

Whoops - sorry Janus missed your post about moving. If you are keen on doing antenatal yoga Annabel Hargreaves runs a class in Wimbledon, but you need to sign up NOW if you want to get in before you have the baby - her classes have max 8 people in them so heavily oversubscribed. I did about six classes, and enjoyed them - not very strenuous but very relaxing. I will post contact details when I'm home.

Harrysmum · 16/08/2002 10:33

Bit freaky scummy! I am convinced that this one is a girl (no idea why) just as I was equally convinced that ds would be a boy (and had my heart set so badly that I really wanted to know at the 20wk scan so that I could get my head round it being something different). Scan is a week on Monday so fingers crossed that all will be revealed - I am dying to know again!

I had one session a week for 4 weeks (from 10-15 weeks pg), then one a month, but now I'm having one every two weeks (with an extra session booked in on my due date to see if she can get things started!!). It has cost quite a lot of money but I think its been worth it as I had always suffered from headaches but never migraines before I was pg and they were horrible.

As I mentioned, I was cynical at first but my SIL had recommended it and she is a medic so I tried it and voila! No more headaches and it also really really helps my bad back and any stress I might have.

Let me know how it goes.

Enid · 16/08/2002 13:37

Meant to say that before the treatments I had v bad sickness and a migraine at least every week. After the first treatment the migraines disappeared totally, but it didn't really help the sickness, although it did lessen in severity.
