Hello, I'm currently 11 weeks pregnant. My first blood results showed my iron levels were ok, but my Hemoglobin cell count was a little low. I'm now being tested for b12 and folate deficiency. Can anyone tell me if I have anything to worry about please? What the treatment could be if the next tests show a problem and will my pregnancy/ birth be ok?

My first pregnancy with my daughter never showed any of this which is bizarre!

I was deficient in both b12 and folate acid a few years ago albeit not pregnant then. I was given injections for the b12 - initially a loading dose of 6 injections in two weeks and then one every 3 months. And I had tablets for the folate acid.

I am taking supplements for both from boots during pregnancy but I’d see what the doctors want to do because they may wish to give you a bigger dose than what you get from over the counter supplements.

It’s also not necessarily a longer term issue. My blood tests since have all been normal. I can’t comment on how it would affect pregnancy and birth but once they get your levels up it should help.

One of the side effects for me of low b12 was exhaustion and low mood so something to watch for.

Your diet can also help. I think red meat and certain fortified cereals will have more b12 in them?

Fingers crossed the results come back ok for you.
