Gender scan confusion and error?

Gender scan error?

We had a gender scan at 17 weeks + 2 days at Window to the Womb and were told within seconds of the scan starting that it was unequivocally a boy and what seemed to be a penis was highlighted on the scan. I then had my 20 week anomaly scan at 19 weeks yesterday and the sonographer said ‘it’s a girl’ and then asked if this was confirming what I had been told. I told her that I had actually been told it was a boy and she was really shocked and started doubting herself. She kept checking and showing me three white lines and saying she couldn’t see anything else between the legs but normally if they had said it was a boy then it means they had seen unmistakeable boy parts. She then said the best she could advise was for me to ask for a re-scan at the private place which I have done but are going to charge me again if it turns out they were right about it being a boy! Has something similar happened to anyone here and should I believe what was found in the more recent scan?

Not happened to me but it’s happened to a someone I know where they were told two different things at scans. Can’t remember which one was right but I think if you need to know definitely go for another scan. Did they do a 3D scan? When I found out I was having a boy with Dc1 they showed him in 3D (or is it 4D?) and you couldn’t doubt it. This was at 16 weeks so by my 20 week scan it was even more obvious that he was a boy as he’d grown.

This happened to me so it certainly can happen!! I'm 32 weeks now and had a private scan at 16+2 they put the gender in a balloon and we did a reveal, a little boy!
I then went to my anomaly scan at 20+3 who then said baby girl, the sonographer asked another sonographer to come in and give her opinion without telling her the situation, she then confirmed girl!
I contacted the private place who scanned me for free, again they confirmed baby girl and didn't charge us for the scan, they also refunded us for the balloon we paid for and gave us a free 4d scan
I had the 4d at 29 weeks and again they confirmed baby girl!

20+ weeks is alot more accurate and as far as I read girl bits can be swollen so this may have been confused for boy parts, or the cord? Either way it's worth going back just for peace of mind because I hated the confusion. 20 week scan is probably the one to go off though as its alot more visable at that stage

17 weeks is a bit early which is why nhs won't tell you until the 20 week scan x

Nowthenforever2019 · 06/04/2019 06:12

And that's why I'd never get a scan with one of those places. They just want the money. Totally pointless.

colehawlins · 06/04/2019 06:17

I'd just wait a bit TBH. The sex isn't the most important thing anyway (understatement), and this all sounds like a lot of stress and expense and rush.

Explains it better than I can

Could it be twins? With different sonographers seeing different babies who take it it turns to hide?

When I had a private gender scan I'm pretty sure I had to sign hundreds of disclaimers acknowledging they could be 100 percent accurate. The nhs hospital refused to give any information about the sex of the baby for this reason.

I’d be going with the results of the NHS anomaly scan, OP, all day long.

It’s the scan where they’re looking for abnormalities, OP. Those technicians are eagle-eyed. The gender bit is the easy part! So if the anomaly scan sonographer says girl, put your money on their word. It’s bond.

RuskBaby · 06/04/2019 08:02

Happened to a colleague. Boy at private scan, went shopping a lot! NHS said girl it is.

NannyPear · 06/04/2019 08:03

It's always the risk when finding out the sex! Well you have two options 1) go back to the private place and get it confirmed and potentially pay again or 2) change your mindset and be prepared for a surprise at the end.
Personally I'd go back and get a repeat scan.
I'll put my bets on it being a girl though as boy bits are undeniable at the 20 week scan and things aren't as swollen on girl bits at that stage.

Buddytheelf85 · 06/04/2019 15:09

Happened to a collleague of mine. Scan at 17 weeks said girl, NHS at 20 weeks said boy. NHS were right!

Are you suggesting that at 20 weeks the sonograoher can’t see one of the babies at any given time?! Hmm

HalfBloodPrincess · 06/04/2019 15:32

I was told ‘likely’ a girl at my 20 week scan. This is my fourth pregnancy and I’ve had ‘it’s an X 100%’ for all 3 previous babies.

I must admit, although it was frustrating not knowing for sure, to the point I almost paid for a private sexing scan, I’m quite pleased that I don’t know the sex the closer it gets to my due date. Kind of makes me wish I’d never found out with the others.

With regard to pp question about twins - it is possible! A friend had an anterior placenta so the sonograms were done from the side up until she was 34 weeks when she needed a growth scan as she was measuring big. It’s only at that point they saw them both!

HJWT · 06/04/2019 17:19

@LadyMA a family member was told boy at 16 weeks and girl at 20 weeks...

stucknoue · 06/04/2019 17:24

I would trust the nhs, - I saw a job ad for one of those private scan places, no experience necessary they said!

Chocolateisfab · 06/04/2019 17:27

When I went into labour with dd a ds appeared instead. Scans at 20+22weeks said girl.

Mariam21 · 11/12/2022 22:39
