Measuring big

I am 31 weeks and just measured 36cm at midwife. Was 31cm at 28 weeks. I have been referred for a growth scan. I'm piling on the weight in pregnancy but at a similar rate to my last, and not significantly in the last 3 weeks.

Ive obviously had a Google but just thought I'd check in here for some real life experiences and outcomes.

Can anyone tell me their experiences please?

I was measuring big in my first pregnancy by the paper tape measure. I was warned to expect a decent 8lb heading towards 9lb baby.

My baby was 6lb 10oz!! We had to stop at Boots on the way home to buy Tiny Baby sized clothes as everything we had was miles too big!

I wasn't sent for a growth scan so cannot comment on that. From what I've heard they are slightly more accurate though.

I am measuring 3 weeks ahead according to tape measure and far above the top line on the chart but growth scan shows a baby 87th percentile, so big but not exceptionally so. Are they sending you for a scan?

Mikewazowskismrs · 05/04/2019 17:22

Following as I measured 38cm at nearly 33 weeks the other day. Have a growth scan on Thursday !

RChick · 05/04/2019 18:23

I'm waiting on a scan date. Interested how you get on Mikes Mrs

I measured big all the way through and had several growth scans predicting a 90th percentile plus baby. She came out bang on 50th centile at 7lb 10. Fundal height measurements in particular are so inaccurate. My bump was big because she was head down with her bum sticking out from 28 weeks or so! You could feel her bum at the top of my bump.

Pashazade · 05/04/2019 20:15

They started squawking at me about a big baby around 34 weeks if I recall correctly. They said he was measuring big got all concerned at me. He turned out to be 8lb 7oz. But he did have a big head!!!

Adviceplease1234 · 05/04/2019 21:42

Have you been tested for gestational diabetes? I measured big and turns out that was why despite my 27 week blood tests coming back fine! My bump has measured anything from 2 and 4 weeks ahead throughout. Growth scan predicts it’s on the 83 centile so not too massive

Mikewazowskismrs · 05/04/2019 22:26

@RChick I’ll let you know!

I have been tested for gd and came back negative with low result but expect they might want to test me again if he’s measuring big,

LittleBirdBlues · 05/04/2019 22:36

I measured small for all my 3 pregnancies and my last baby was born weighing 9.5 pounds. Bump size isn't indicative of baby size.

FrangipaniBlue · 05/04/2019 22:59

I measured big and at 34wks was told to expect a 9-10lb baby Sad

DS was 7lb........ Hmm

RChick · 06/04/2019 04:52

GD test was fine.
From the sounds of others experiences, it might not lead to anything complicated, so I'll just view it as an opportunity to see her on the scan again for now.

I was measuring big, every single time they tape measured my tummy it was above the 90th percentile, and now with the growth scans his exactly where he should be!
It could just be you have a lot fluid, so that's why it's coming up big!
When they first told me I asked around a lot of people and out of 10 only 1 of them actually had a "big" baby from it the rest were all normal sized!

Lauren83 · 06/04/2019 05:54

I had a growth scan and tests for GD as baby was measuring big, they offered an induction at 38 and he was born by section at 38.3 at 9lbs, glad I didn't go to 42 weeks

PeoniesandPretties · 06/04/2019 06:34

I started to measure big towards the end, predicted a 9lb baby, 10.8lb came out via emcs. Sometimes they under estimate too, it really is a guessing game, good luck op.

SinkyMalinks · 06/04/2019 07:26

Last pregnancy I was 8cm/weeks big throughout. Growthscans showed normal baby and normal fluid. Baby was 7.13 at birth (very average). He must have been sitting oddly.

This time, I’m having regular growth scans (due to preeclampsia last time, not anything to do with bump size) so am not being measured. Baby is on smaller side but I’m still carrying big. It’s just how I do it!

sirmione16 · 06/04/2019 07:35

They're notoriously inaccurate !!

I measured 8lb 1 at 37 weeks so they expected him to be a heavy 9lb-er and wasn't allowed to go over due, had to be induced. At 40 weeks exactly, he came out...7lb 15!! Not even 8lb. Of course we didn't buy any small baby clothes, all for the larger weight. Never mind hey.

Rubberduckies · 06/04/2019 07:50

Growth scans are notoriously unreliable, and tape measurements even more so. I'm the opposite and my measurements have been 4 weeks behind, but growths scans on the 50th percentile...!

Mummab3ar · 06/04/2019 13:22

I was on the 90th percentile the whole was through my 1st pregnancy, I'm tiny so qas sent for a scan at 36/37 weeks. The consultant who scanned me said I should definitely expect a 9-10lbs baby, his words were "definitely all baby, it's not excess fluid" which of course I was terrified 😂! Anyway my son was born at 7lbs 6oz 🙄! And I got myself all worked up for nothing 😂😂!

NatureGal · 06/04/2019 20:52

I have always measured bigger in all 3 previous pregnancies, growth scans have always been inaccurate too. First estimated 7.5lbs, measured a wee or two ahead, born days later weighing 5lb 2oz, similar with second DC. Third I was huge, measured two weeks ahead, had a growth scan at 38 weeks and it suggested baby measuring at 32/33 weeks, born days later weighing 4lb10oz. Neither measurements or scans have been accurate for me. Currently pregnant and scans say 50th/60th centile but tape measure says 99th.

RChick · 08/04/2019 12:36

Scan booked late this afternoon. I will update once i know what is happening.

Good luck !

RChick · 08/04/2019 19:22

So baby measuring very average, but is breech so i wonder if it's her awkward position that's causing the large tape measurement. Otherwise, it's probably just my fat!

I measured big. Then they scanned to check and told no normal. 10lb 10.

SheldonandMama · 08/04/2019 19:44

I was told to expect 10lbs+ each time but they were 6lb 12 and 7lb 11...
