Swollen hands and feet

Currently 37 weeks pregnant and over the 1-2 weeks I've had mild swelling in my feet and hands. A little under my chin too.

But the last couple days it's just getting worse. My feet are huge and none of my shoes fit at all now. My hands are swollen all the time but worse during the night and early in the morning - I can't make a fist and my fingers keep locking.

Super uncomfortable all the time and nothing really helps relieve the pressure. Does anyone have any tips? I have a midwife appointment next Tuesday so I'll mention it to her then but I assume it's just normal at this stage?

Not normal for it to happen so quickly. can you get an urgent appointment?

ryanreynolds · 05/04/2019 17:21

Have you got a maternity advice line in your area? Ring and ask their advice. I wouldn't wait until Tuesday though.

Chickenvindasaag · 05/04/2019 17:22

Go get your blood pressure checked ASAP. Can be a sign of pre eclampsia

Sunshinegirl82 · 05/04/2019 17:23

Call triage, sudden swelling is a sign of pre eclampsia so I would seek advice urgently.

TheLionQueen1 · 05/04/2019 17:25

I would speak to your MW team sooner than next week. My feet suddenly got incredibly swollen about 37 weeks and I had developed pre-eclampsia and was induced admitted, monitored and induced at 38+5 weeks, so personally I wouldn't wait. If you are just swollen though, swimming was the only thing that eased it for me!

Calling now, thanks for the advice

How did you get on?

mrsk28 · 06/04/2019 10:03

Called the midwife and she suggested seeing my gp today to check everything is ok so waiting to hear back about an appointment. If they can't fit me in I'll go to a&e in the maternity hospital.

Will update again later x

Hope all is well OP!

mrsk28 · 06/04/2019 14:39

Thanks! In hospital now.

Blood pressure was 159/90 so they've given me meds to try lower it but I'll be staying if it doesn't come down soon. Baby is perfect though so happy about that.

Thanks so much everyone for suggesting I get checked. I was going to leave it until my appointment on Tuesday and feel silly now 🙈

Glad you got checked OP and they're monitoring! At least you're 37 weeks so baby can come now if needs be. BP is a funny thing, mine went from ok to something like 200/120 in the space of 48 hours!

Hope it comes down soon soon for you.

mrsk28 · 06/04/2019 20:05

@Sunshinegirl82 thanks for that. Admitted now so they're going to monitor everything for 48 hours and see how things go.

BP still high after meds but not as bad. Limited fluid intake because my sodium is low so that needs to improve but they are happy enough to deliver baby early if nothing improves 😬

Have they got you on the labetalol? I took industrial amounts of the stuff!

mrsk28 · 06/04/2019 21:49

Yes I've had two doses so far and they're gonna check me every 4 hours

Pleased you went in and they're keeping an eye on you! Thanks

mrsk28 · 07/04/2019 18:02

Thanks @ryanreynolds

Staying again tonight and having a growth scan in the morning. I'll see a doctor after that to get a plan but sounds like they'll want to induce before 39 weeks anyway. Currently 37+2.

The midwife told me it's a lot more painful to be induced so pretty nervous if it goes that way!

Just wanted to update everyone.

I was induced last week and our beautiful baby boy arrived on 11/04/19. Induced due to preeclampsia and stayed in hospital for 8 days before getting to come home with baby.

Just wanted to say thank you so much to everyone for your advice that was completely invaluable to me and my baby xx
