SMP Urgent Question

I've submitted everything for SMP to payroll at my employer two days before the deadline. My manager has now messaged me saying to make sure I get my MATB1 back in time to claim SMP from the government before the cut off?? I'm so confused as I thought I only had to let payroll know. I didn't know I had to claim SMP directly from the government. Does anyone know if that's right?

You just have to give the MAT form to your employer. They sort out how you're actually paid. You obligation is over

You have to give them your MAT1b, but this doesn't have the same deadline as telling them you are taking leave and claiming SMP (it can be given later so don't worry if you've not given it to them yet, just give it as soon as you can - its in the "proof you're pregnant" section of the link below).
