Having a family dinner on Saturday night and I can’t drink because i’m 5 weeks pregnant. I don’t want everyone to know just yet and normally I would have a gin or a glass of wine. What can I tell them that’s not super obvious that i’m knocked up. I can’t be the designated driver as I dont drive.

Lent?

Loseitandkeepitlost · 28/03/2019 17:58

Hungover from Friday and can’t face it?

Iggly · 28/03/2019 17:58

You has a massive night out the night before?

On a diet?

Or just take the wine and don’t drink it. Give it subtly to your partner.

Or make your own gin and tonic and miss out the gin

bobstersmum · 28/03/2019 17:58

I would say I've had a migraine and don't want to set it off again.

TyrionsNextWife · 28/03/2019 17:58

You could say you’ve pulled your back and the doctors given you painkillers that you don’t want to drink with. Would mean a bit of acting though Grin
Congratulations!!

missmouse101 · 28/03/2019 17:59

Urinary infection?

DomesticAnarchist · 28/03/2019 18:00

Drinking alcohol vastly increases your risk of cancer and messes with your sleep. And poor sleep has also increased your risk of cancer, obesity, diabetes, depression, anxiety and hastens neurological decline. Improved sleep is linked to better executive function, and vastly improved immune system.

But it's probably easier to say lent!

everycowandagain · 28/03/2019 18:01

As already suggested, take a glass of wine, wave it around and get your partner to drink it. Nobody will notice. Far less obvious than a lame excuse.

DomesticAnarchist · 28/03/2019 18:02

"Has also increased"? What? I think I meant "also increases..." but I didn't sleep well last night...!

brizzlemint · 28/03/2019 18:02

Congratulations, I'd also use Lent as my excuse.

museumum · 28/03/2019 18:02

If you normally drink then the only convincing reason imo is a HUGE hangover.

Samind · 28/03/2019 18:02

Bring your own non alcoholic stuff 😌

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 28/03/2019 18:02

Truthfully if they know you are likely to be trying then even if they don't say so on the night many will guess you are pregnant especially if you normally drink.

The easiest option is to still pretend you are drinking E.G. make yourself a gin and tonic with no gin in it. This is the best strategy any other will likely arouse suspicion.

Moltenpink · 28/03/2019 18:03

Order a fancy sounding alcohol free cocktail. Be vague when people ask what’s in it.

MikeUniformMike · 28/03/2019 18:04

You're on meds and would prefer not to say what. Metronidazole or anti-depressants perhaps?

AnnaComnena · 28/03/2019 18:04

Can't you just have a glass of wine in front of you and pretend to sip it through the evening? Will anyone really be watching you closely enough to notice that you don't actually drink it?

I think you might be more likely to raise suspicions if you actually draw attention to the fact that you're not drinking.

randomsabreuse · 28/03/2019 18:10

Driving - I lost a few discussions with DH on whose turn it was...

Diet - have you seen how many calories/too many syns... also good cover for slight bloating...

Lent if you've not seen them recently

Major health kick also possible- training tomorrow...

whohaa · 28/03/2019 18:48

I just say I've given it up because we're TTC. Then they assume I'm not already pregnant.

ValleyoftheHorses · 28/03/2019 18:50

Say you’ve got cystitis. Drink a lot of water and go to the loo quite a few times
Congratulations

PotteringAlong · 28/03/2019 18:52

There isn’t one. Everyone will know you’re pregnant, even if they’re too polite to say it to you.

Topofthehills · 28/03/2019 18:52

You've got a bit of a headache/sore throat and don't fancy it? I can never face alcohol when I feel under the weather.

NewSchoolNewName · 28/03/2019 18:59

Not Lent unless you’ve not seen them for weeks.

Lent started 3 weeks ago. The normal giving things up for Lent pattern is people starting strong with no alcohol / chocolate whatever at all for the first few weeks, and then some of them start falling off the wagon several weeks in. Not the other way round!

A massive hangover would be more convincing.

InDubiousBattle · 28/03/2019 19:00

If you really, really don't want anyone to guess just have a glass of wine. Make it a small one with soda and sip it. I agree with Pottering, any excuse won't actually be believed if you're normally a drinker and this is something you would normally drink at.

icanhearapindrop · 28/03/2019 19:02

I took a glass of wine when I was pregnant, and sipped a tiny bit so people saw, and then my DH downed it when no one was looking. Everyone said they were surprised when we told them I was pregnant, as I’d ‘been drinking’ a couple of weeks before. They were probably lying, but I like to believe them.

TuppenceFaithfully · 28/03/2019 19:02

I'd go with I've been having migraines as a pp said
