Can anyone tell me if the midwife will try and find the heartbeat at a booking appointment If I'm 10 weeks. I know it can sometimes be heard from 10 weeks with their Dopplers. I could really do with some reassurance of some kind before my scan as I'm so so anxious atm

Nothing like that usually happens at the booking appointment, it’s mostly paperwork, blood & urine test. Scan will be a couple of weeks later. Is there anything in particular making you so worried?

Bluebelltulip · 27/03/2019 18:35

Not heard of them checking that early. Some do at 16 weeks but many still don't at that point and only do it later on. It can be really hard to find that early and can caused unnecessary worry.

Hi there. I'm afraid not, it's far too early to attempt to hear it, they don't even try at the 16 week appointment in some areas. Have you thought about booking a private reassurance scan before your 12 week one?

Bambamber · 27/03/2019 18:44

My midwife did, but she said they don't normally as it can cause even more anxiety if you don't hear a heartbeat, even though that's totally normal that early on

Hollowvictory · 27/03/2019 18:49

You don't get a scan at your booking in appointment it's seperate.

Baconcob · 27/03/2019 19:15

No, it’ll be blood test, urine, BP and lots of paperwork about you and your partner. If your partner can’t make the appointment it’s worth asking him any relevant medical history from him and his family before you go. They will also ask you away from your partner about any domestic violence/abuse. Just so you know, it’s a standard question.

@Hollowvictory hi I know I won't get a scan. I meant I'm anxious and want reassurance whilst waiting for that scan

I'm only really anxious as I've had a few bleeds here and there and my sickness seems to have really gone down a lot last few days. I still feel a bit sick but no where near how bad I was and with my other kids it went on a lot longer. I've had 3 babies before (youngest is 5) but I'm just older and so so anxious in this pregnancy

You're welcome

Bambamber · 27/03/2019 19:41

The problem is they may not be able to find a heartbeat because it is a bit early to be able to find it. And if you don't hear it, you will be even more anxious than before and so could potentially do more harm than good

kgeal3 · 27/03/2019 19:47

@Bambamber yes that's true. I've just bought a private reassurance scan x

My booking didn't even do blood or urine tests - they were done at hospital for first dating scan.

Was just a lot of form filling and explanation of antenatal care for me (all of which went out the window when I ended up HR)

Thanks everyone x

Try not to worry! I was on edge before my 12 week scan as you can't hear or feel baby yet and the back of my mind I was thinking the worst. Just stay calm.
The only way they will book you in for a earlier scan is if you started bleeding heavy (chance of miscarriage)
I had my 20 week scan today and I still cry every time I see that little heartbeat on the screen ❤️
