Single Vitamin A overdose - is my baby safe?

Hello everyone,

This is a quick question about vitamin A in pregnancy.

I have just found out I am pregnant (5 weeks) and SO HAPPY!! 🥰🥰
But I currently have a cold, and a week ago (before I knew I was pregnant) I took 1 very high dose (50,000iu) of vitamin A and also 50,000iu of vitamin D to give my immune system a boost.

This is a remedy tried and tested by someone I trust to bust a cold before it even starts.

I’m not concerned about the Vitamin D. But after doing research I found that Vitamin A (especially high doses) can be damaging to your baby. - can anyone advise? Do you I think I will be okay with just one dose, or will I have done damage? 😔 I’m pretty terrified at the thought :(

.... I do fully expect some repsponses telling me I’m an idiot but I will say again, I had No idea I was pregnant!

Thank you in Advance :)

I don't think the baby is attached to your system by the placenta yet so chances are it's fine. Was it retinol or beta carotene?

That is a relief! It was retinol drops
Thank you so much for your response, It means a lot!

I'm sure you will be fine. My mum ate Liver twice a week through all her pregnancies on the doctors orders (for more iron) now it's a banned food because of its vitamin a levels. Too much vitamin a can be bad for the baby, but not necessarily. Also agree that it was so early so baby probably didn't get any of it!
