Stem cell banking

Hope this is right thread... anyone out there banking or donating their cord blood? It's so expensive to bank the stem cells 😒 I'm thinking we might just donate ours. ❤️ if it can cure someone's ms or other diseases then it's going to a good cause. I'd like to bank it for our baby girl though. The placenta has rich stem cells too. Which makes me think, consuming it makes sense? No?! Who's on what side of fence here?

I would have donated. Looked into it. But all the nhs hospitals that do it are down south (there are only four, if I remember rightly)... so even on the nhs, it's limited what you can donate.

Hey @physicskate I'm at uclh so I'm sure I can donate there. The whole private banking option seems a bit of a pain and it's not guaranteed to work... also a lot of money! I wonder how much it costs for a transfer later on if needed. Probably £40k even if you use your own banked cells.

We donated DC1’s cord blood and I’d encourage anyone who is able to do so to consider doing the same. Unfortunately it wasn’t an option for DC2 as we had moved away.

I never considered private banking. Even tiny amounts of cord blood (eg after delayed cord clamping) are valuable for research and I felt strongly that I wanted our donation to have the potential to help someone who needed it, whether through therapeutic use or research.

I used www.cordlifeindia.com/ to preserve stem cell banking for my new born baby.
