Early scans

Hi,
I have booked an early scan (6 weeks 5 days) for this evening. The idea is to put my mind at ease but I'm worried they won't see anything!
What is the likelihood of anything showing up?
Thanks

I've got one booked for next week and thinking the same thing! Keep us updated hun!! Good luck 🎉 xxx

I desperately wanted an early scan and mentioned it to my mw. She said that it’ll be reassuring in the moment, for that day, maybe for the week, but then what, you’ll just want another. And having a scan doesn’t prevent anything happening either. You don’t see much on an early scan, we saved our money and put it towards baby things for when our ds was born. I know how long the wait until 12 weeks feels, but it’s worth it to know that you can see more and the risk of anything happening from then onwards is a lot lower!

Loopytiles · 15/03/2019 14:48

That sounds a bit too early - you’ll worry more if it’s too early to see heartbeat etc and need to wait a week for a repeat scan.

I'm 6+2 and I said to my husband the other day I want a viewing hatch! Just so I could check and talk to the sweet pea!

IWantChocolates · 15/03/2019 14:54

I had a bleed at 6 weeks so had a transvaginal scan that showed a fetal pole and a heartbeat. So possible to see something. But it could also be too early, depending on when it was fertilised and implanted. I'd have said 8 weeks was a better time to book a scan, but you should still see a sac.

Wise words above. An early scan can only tell you what is happening at that moment. It's not a guarantee.

I agree that the reassurance is short lived but having discovered a missed miscarriage 5 weeks after it actually happened, I wish I had paid the money and had a scan so I would have known earlier on. I spent weeks feeling pregnant, counting down to the day I could have the scan and tell my friends and family. I know I was unlucky but I definitely feel next time I'll go for a scan at about 8 weeks to try and save some heartache x

Topsy15 · 15/03/2019 15:07

And OP I had actually had a scan at 6 weeks 3 days and saw the heartbeat! So you should be fine x

circlemat · 15/03/2019 15:12

@Topsy15 exactly the same happened to me, baby died at 5 weeks but I didn't find out until I was 10 weeks pregnant. I find them very reassuring personally.

GemmaJen · 15/03/2019 15:15

I had an mmc last year picked up at 12 weeks, for me the worse part was not knowing the pregnancy had ended for 4 weeks and I'd had no idea. This time I had a scan at 6w 0d and we found fetal pole and heartbeat, the feeling of relief was immediate. Go into an early scan knowing that you might not see what you want and it needs more time, but imo for us it was 100% worth it. I had a further scans at 9 and 11w to check progress and they helped me keep calm. The fear of miscarriage doesn't go away, but not knowing anything was too much for me mentally, I needed those scans to keep sane. Drink plenty of water for an early scan though, my 6w was abdominal, but I didn't drink enough for the 9w one and had to go tv. It's not awful, but it is nicer to have the abdominal scans. Early scans aren't for everybody, but it's your choice to make.

HJWT · 15/03/2019 15:24

Cancel and wait till at least 8 weeks, I had a scan at 5+3 and saw a heartbeat (due to a bleed) I'm nearly 8 weeks and cant stop worrying that it could of stopped growing so going to pay for a scan at 9 weeks xx

Sleepyquest · 15/03/2019 15:28

I really can't decide what to do! Currently 5+5. Was about to book a scan for 8 weeks until I read all these. I am a person who agonises over everything anyway so not sure how much reassurance it would give me!? It's our first baby and I'd like to know all is as it should be. I'd hate to go at 12 weeks and find it wasn't alright.

Please advise!

emmagrace96 · 15/03/2019 15:30

I had a bleed at 6 weeks and had a scan at 7, I saw sac and baby and heartbeat. Waiting for my next scan now x

HJWT · 15/03/2019 15:31

@Sleepyquest I would book for after 8 weeks x

bea179 · 15/03/2019 15:34

Hi OP I had a scan last week because I had a general anaesthetic. I thought I was 7 weeks 2 days. They didn't even need to do it transvaginally, they saw it all perfectly just by scanning on my belly. They said I was 2 days further than I thought. I have no doubt they'll be able to see your baby.
Good luck for tonight!

cranstonmanor · 15/03/2019 15:46

I had one at 6+4 (because of previous ectopic) and there was a heartbeat. According to the sonographer that is, I couldn't make head nor tail of it tbh and didn't see anything beating.

Sleepyquest · 15/03/2019 16:34

Thanks @HJWT was planning on doing 8+5, day before my first midwife appointment. What do you reckon?

Also good luck OP!

Missbdhfc · 15/03/2019 16:47

So for me it was worth going. For now at least, there is a fetus with a strong heartbeat dated 6wks 5 days which is bang on. I know anything could happen between now and 12 weeks but I'm so pleased I've seen it. Thanks for the advice!
