My Sweep, your sweep?

I'm currently 40+1 with DC2, I had a sweep yesterday and MW said baby was engaged, I was 1cm with soft cervix. I had back ache and cramps afterwards, but nothing else since. I wasn't expecting to go into immediate labour, but I was hoping something may have happened by now. 😫

I've got another booked for Monday, but in the meantime, I'm just curious how you got on with yours. So if you've ever had one, please can you tell me..

  1. How many weeks were you?
  2. Was it for DC1, DC2 etc.?
  3. Was it your first, second sweep etc.?
  4. Did having a sweep work for you?
  5. If so, how long after having it, did you go into labour?

Thank you in advance 🙂

With DD I had first sweep done by midwife around due date but it didn’t work at all.
I went in to be induced a couple of weeks later as DD was well overdue and showing no signs of budging. The consultant gave me another sweep and told me to go for a walk. Within half an hour I started to experience strong period-like cramps which soon developed into contractions. I was then sent home to allow contractions to develop. That was at midday on the Thursday. By early hours on Friday I went in as contractions were very strong and close together.

Sweeps at 40, 41 and 41+3 with DC1
Did absolutely nothing - induced at 41+5 and born at 42 via forceps
Currently 37 weeks with DC2 - hoping for a better labour and researching raspberry leaf tea, ordering pineapples...

  1. 40+2
  2. DC1
  3. First sweep, with a follow up booked for as soon after as they would let me (40+4), which I didn’t need because... 4/5) Don’t know if it was the sweep or not, but labour started with waters breaking around lunchtime when I was 40+4, contractions started early evening and DD was born early hours of the morning.

I remember trying to leave a voicemail with the clinic to say I wouldn’t be coming for a sweep (as I was headed into hospital to check waters had definitely gone), and had an amusing message the next day to check if I was ok/wanted to rebook as I’d missed my appointment...

  1. 40+3
  2. DC1
  3. 1
  4. Seems like it but can't rule out correlation rather than causation. I had been having stop/start contractions for a few days. DC was in a tricky position so may have been stopping and starting for a while without sweep?
  5. Within 8 hours, had cramps that increased to contractions quite quickly, and bloody show straight after.

I was told my midwife to go for a walk, which I did. Then sat bouncing on ball, then walked again to family for dinner. Managed to keep a brave face as contractions kicked off over dinner, and then had quite a tricky walk home.
