Possible twins

Hello - I had an early ultrasound today because of some spotting - I’m 6 weeks exactly. The sonographer found a gestational sac, yolk sac and feta pole, and thought she could detect a heartbeat. She also said there was a second yolk sac, but she couldn’t see a fetal pole.

The way she spoke about it was that this had been a twin pregnancy - and seemed to suggest the second yolk sac wouldn’t develop (I didn’t ask the question directly as I was a bit shocked).

Is it likely that if one of embryos has a heartbeat at this stage (and is at least visible), that the other is not viable? (I’ve heard of vanishing twin syndrome). Or could it perhaps be that it will develop, but it’s so early right now it’s hard to tell/couldn’t see enough? I suppose what I’m asking is if there were two would their development be identical?

Any experience of this welcome! Thanks!

I don't have experience of 2 yolk sacs but just wanted to say at 6 weeks I had an early scan and only saw a yolk sac as no fetal pole was seen (I'm 10 weeks now and everything's fine) but it could be that one of the fetal poles has developed and the other one hasn't developed yet? Maybe it could still grow? I hope so! Good luck

@newbabyyy2019 thank you for your reply - that’s what I’m hoping! It’s reassuring to hear that your fetal pole didn’t show at that point. The sonographer didn’t sound hopeful but I’m crossing my fingers Smile
