Hair dye and early pregnancy

I'm 5+1 and have a hair appointment booked on Saturday. Worried about hair dye - I normally have all over colour but is this dangerous? I don't really want to tell my hairdresser as it's so early but am I best off asking her for advice?

I had my hair coloured at 14 weeks, did check with the hairdresser first and she said it was totally fine. Not sure about in the first 12 weeks tho sorry

I had mine done but did it much later in the pregnancy. I'm sure I read not to do it in the 1st trimester. Can you just have highlights so nothing touches your scalp?

Bigonesmallone3 · 14/03/2019 09:11

Colour as in a bleach or a dye?

givememarmite · 14/03/2019 09:25

I had highlights done throughout two previous pregnancies and had them this time before I knew I was pregnant. I normally tell my hairdresser even when it has been very early as the dye can take differently. Indeed this time when I didn't know the colour didn't turn quite how we thought it would and now I know why Smile
I would check with them first especially for a full head of colour.

Thanks ladies - dye, no bleach. I'll message her. She's lovely, I'm just wary of telling people so early!

The issue with hair dye is your skin might be a bit more sensitive than when not pregnant. It's not dangerous. Just tell her.

I've had mine done as normal - perm colour on the roots to cover grey and a few highlights.
I have seen absolutely zero credible evidence of any risk.

GabbyGal · 14/03/2019 09:34

My GP told me it was fine. Agree that it can take differently though, I have a few grey hairs above my right temple which just will not take colour since I’ve been pregnant!

Ambs81 · 14/03/2019 10:59

Maybe go for semi perm as less chemicals??
I think the biggest risk is you reacting rather then if harming the baby.
I’m 10wks now and going to get it coloured this weekend as can’t wait any longer!

My hairdresser said she would only do foils during the first trimester. In the end I’ve been away so much I’m already 11 weeks and can hang on a couple more weeks till I get my colour redone!!

My SIL teaches hairdresser and the main issue with colouring hair is nothing to do with harming the baby. It's to do with issues with the hair taking colour differently (or not taking it at all) and the fact your skin may be more sensitive. You are fine to get your hair coloured but I would tell the hairdresser in case you have a skin flare up.
