Burning pain in ribs

My rib pain is getting steadily worse. It feels like a constant burning sensation particularly in my left side and it affects the right hand side too sometimes. This often combines with a really strong pins and needles sensations in the same place right under my boobs. The skin is really sore in that area when I touch it - makes wearing a bra fun I can tell you.

Back pain seems to get worse when the rib pain flares up.

Should I be worrying about this or is it normal? I've managed to try and ignore it so far but its getting worse to the point that it can actually reduce me to tears on a really bad day.

I could call my midwife but to be frank I trust MN more given the advice she's given me to date. I'm seeing her on Wed for 32 week check up but I'm not holding my breath for any words of wisdom.

Before I got pg (and then during) I had rib pain that I ended up having physio for. That has now gone but was bloody bad, they even gave me codeine for it which they don't normally px during pregnancy.

Now I get some pain on the right rib which is just how you describe, but not as bad as yours. I also get that weird thing that feels like pins and needles and I think that is when the baby puts her foot under my rib as I can usually feel a hard lump there and if I rub it she moves her foot.

Rib pain is bloody horrible but very common in pregnancy. You could ask for a referral to physio that specialises in pregnancy. Good luck!

Hi Edie >

Whilst I wouldn't wish this on anyone else its also nice to know I'm not that unusual!!

I am quite shortish (5 ft 4) and I suspect that doesn't really help - just my luck that my baby seems to get height from dh!!

I had awful rib pain at this stage of pregnancy it is very common and it could also be gallstones (also very comon in pregancy)

either way it sucks!

Hi PP!!

Yes im the same height as you and also have a tall DP! His mum also is very tall.

My physio helped a bit but I don't think that was related to pg, just made worse by it IYSWIM. However sometimes I can actually feel her feet under my rib and it is bloody uncomfortable, bless her!

Gallstones??? Oh God.

don't worry they will often pass on their own and it's just as likely to be the little ones hoof digging in.

hi penny, snap with the symptoms! I also find lying on my left side (the one they recommend) makes it worse as well. When I first got this pain I thought it was just the skin affected so I started putting calamine lotion on it but nothing changed. Weird thing is that LO kicks mostly on my right side so don't understand the pain on the left Nice to know I'm not alone though.

I am also quite short (5ft1) and my dh is 6ft 2!

oops duplicated the last line, my brain isn't with it today. just read the gallstones thing, oh dear, hope we haven't got them!!

Hi,I rib pain with both my pregnancies. It was a burning sensation, and the only thing that eased it was a hot water bottle. Parceptamol (sp?) did nothing to help. A bath might ease the pain as well

It did gradually ease closer to my due dates though, so hopefully yours might too.

missgriss · 09/07/2007 19:17

I had rib pain, even.

Hi Laksa

I found a website yesterday that said rib pain was caused but not just by kicking but by the top of the uterus pressing against the ribs. It can be made worse by kicks but that isn't the sole cause - which would explain why yours hurts even though you get most of the kick action on your right!

Apparently if you lean facing a wall with your hands crossed in front of you and slide your hands up the wall it takes the pressure of your ribs slightly - I tried it and it did work temporarily but staying in that position for hours isn't overly practical!!

hi penny, I guess this exercise opens up that area so there is more room inside? I find myself discarding my bra whenever I can...dh finds it very funny as he keeps finding various items of my clothing lying round the house

xx

LOL laksa - I do that as well!! My dh often comes home to find my bra chucked on the dining table. xx
