Ikea cot?

I am having a cot dilemma. I had thought about getting a cotbed but I am worried about the price and the size of the thing. Plus we plan to have more children soon so figured it might not be worth it.

I had been wondering about this Ikea cot.

It's cheap but still sweet. I am worried about it having no drop side though and no teething rails. This is my first baby so no clue how important these things are.

Any thoughts?

we bought an idea cot for our second. Never used drop sides with my first, and ditto he never chewed the bar top- neither has dd so far. The only thing I would say is that, imho, the mattress isn't great and is quite hard - and of course, only ikea mattress fit ikea beds...

you will need a drop rail otherwise you'll hurt your back!

I too got an ikea cot for my second. I had a cot bed for my first but NEVER used the drop down sides, so it wasn't an issue.
I don't know if it depends on your height at all as it if you need drop down sides. I'm nearly 6 foot, so this may be why I didn't and others swear but it.
Not sure about chewing the side as ds had a chew bar on his cot bed and dd had his cot bed from age 1.

I have an IKEA cot for my dd. It dosen't have drop sides or a teething rail either. I have never had a problem. I am not very tall & don't have a sore back from putting her in. I think the mattress is fine or should I say my dd thinks it is fine & sleeps well(touch wood). I think they are very good value.

I have one that is the same size as an Ikea cot (it was the only place I could find to buy a matress to fit). The only thing is they don't last very long as they are so small, my DD learnt to climb out at 15 months. We had an expensive Mamas and Papas cotbed which had neither drop down sides or a teething rail so not essential as long as there are different heights at which you can put the mattress. The only times I wanted drop down sides was when dd was in the bottom level (from about 9 months) and was in a bad sleep phase - being a midget and the cotbed being very big and deep meant I couldn't do things like stroke her back (although you're probably not meant to do that to get them back to sleep but when I've been up for 2 hours with a teething baby I'll do anything !). Being a cot, its probably not such a problem as it would be smaller.

i do not, nor ever have used the drop side ayway. and ive used...3 cots and several travel cots.

the good trhing abut the cheap (lovely) ikea one is that although they grow out of it, you wont be gutted b/c you didnt spend much. you will also have a better idea a that point what you want from there onwards... an ikea toddler bed for eg

and if youre having more dc, you can use it again.

its a crib you dont want to bother with... they grow out of them in 3 months and mine were never in the sodding thing.

a baskety, carryaboutable bed thing a great idea for your first, so they can sleep wherever is conveneint for you.

Thanks everyone. I am pretty small so perhaps the drop side thing will be an issue for me. Thanks for the link to the John Lewis one - I really want one in white and I am delighted that that one is the same price!!

I don't know why it feels so hard to make this decision - pregnancy is making me insane I think!

im 5'1" and really needed my dropside

i am keeping an eye on this as really liked this cot too as we only have 2 bedrooms and 2d's arein the other so lo will be in our room for soem time and we really dont have space for a cot bed,

glad to hear most found it usefull, also ikea have recently changed the size of their cots and matress's not sure if that mkaes them more available elsewhere i was thinking if i got thiscot wouldnt mind spending say £30-40 on a mattress

It is a pretty cot the ikea one - I like the style of it better than the john lewis one. I think I will go for the john lewis one though as I am also 5ft1" so I think I will need the drop side.

I'm 5'3 and I honestly never once used the drop side ... and ds was the sleeper from hell so I had ample opportunity

The only thing I would say about an ikea cot is do you want to be able to use it for future babies? Like someone else said only ikea mattresses fit ikea cots and they say you should get a new mattress for each baby. I had an ikea crib which I used for DS1 and DS2. However, now pregnant again and ikea have discontinued the crib so I can't get a new mattress so can't use the crib this time.

I don't think you need to buy aa new matress for each baby any more, I'm sure the guidelines have changed.

actually, i couldve used a drop side when ds1 was about...10 months? i was 7m pg with ds2 by then and the bump got in the way a bit... i would lower him down as far as i could reach and then sort of drop him that last bit never woke up tho!
