We asked Clare, a midwife, to go through the process of writing a birth plan - what you should put in, what you should research, what options you have available, if anyone ever sticks to them!

What do you wish you had known before you wrote your first birth plan?

I think the main thing people need on a birth plan is whether they want pain medication and epidural etc, what they want to happen with baby afterwards ( skin to skin, vitamin K jab etc ) all the things you may not be able to answer if things go 'wrong' and people really need to be informed that even though you 'have' a birth plan, thats more a rough idea for the midwife of what you would like, it doesn't mean any of it is going to happen.
