Spa day before 12 weeks

Can anyone advise as to whether spa days are ok or not? I have one booked with a couple of friends and my sister for a months time. I will be 9 weeks by then.

I was reading about some places not allowing you to do any treatments and it not being advisable to go in sauna, steam, jacuzzi etc... I can see if it can be rearranged but suspect I will have to fess up as to why as it's been booked for ages. Or I go but don't use all the facilities or have treatments. Any thoughts? I meant to ask my doctor this morning but totally forgot!

You're a bit limited in what you can enjoy, but I would still go if you are feeling well - does it have a pool? You could swim, get a mani/pedi, lounge about reading - sounds pretty good to me!

The only thing I wouldn’t do is get in a really hot jacuzzi. And I would tell the masseuse you are pregnant. You will probably have people telling you to be more cautious but I definitely had spa days in early pregnancy and I’m pretty sure there is literally not one single documented case of spa treatments causing harm.

No sauna, steam, jacuzzi - basically anything hot. You could still use the pool or mani/pedis. Maybe ring the spa and see what you can/can't do?

I would phone the spa and ask if there are any treatments you will be allowed to have. Some are really strict and won't do any type of massage or peelings etc to pregnant women before 12 weeks. I'd base my decision on their reply!

Also, it sounds like you are only 5 weeks or so at the moment? Is this your first pregnancy? I'm asking because you may be feeling quite unwell in a month's time. I was in a similar situation this time last year, and cancelled a spa day with friends because I was feeling nauseous constantly.

Oh, and congratulations! 💜

You just need to avoid the sauna, steam room and jacuzzi as they are warmer than body temp. You could have a facial, just tell them you’re pregnant so they know what they can use, or a mani/pedi. The spa will be used to pregnant guests and should be able to advise you.

If you don’t want your friends to know then just tell them you find the thermal suite too hot and prefer the pool and/or relaxation room. Then call the spa so you know what treatment you can have and on the day just tell the therapist once you’re away from the group, they won’t mind.

Thanks for the replies all. I was thinking i'd still like to go if i can and just enjoy the pool and spending time with the girls. I am going to ring the spa ajd see what they say first.

@LittleBirdBlues yes it's my first. At the moment i feel fine but i know that could all change so I'll just have to see how it goes i guess.

We had a spa day booked when I would have been 6 weeks, we rang them and they said they wouldn't be able to do anything til after 12 weeks due to the risks.

If you do go I would make them aware - as some essential oils used there can be too strong and should be avoided.

Also, avoid any hot tub/jacuzzi or sauna/steam rooms as per the NHS advice. Swimming pools are usually okay, so long as they are not heated too hot (think body temperature and not higher).

I have a feeling that many spas aren’t insured to treat you before 12 weeks pregnant. My friend is a masseuse and she wouldn’t massage me before 12 weeks.

Up to you completely but if it was me I wouldn’t say anything - I would just book a mani/pedi and facial and avoid the hot facilities. You can still have a lovely day.

Pregnancy packages are usually only second and third trimester.

I rang the spa and they said they wouldn't even let me through the front door at 9 weeks! Better to rearrange for 12 weeks. Not sure what to do now. Might tell my sister what's going on and see if she can help me suggest it is rearranged. I was really looking forward to that as well. :(

@Shefliesonherownwings that's what we had as well and had to rebook. Good luck!
