UTI symptoms but negative test

I've got the classic symptoms of a UTI and spoke to 111 yesterday, who directed me to an out of hours GP appointment. I went in and the urine test showed negative so the GP told me I did not need to be treated. She said that if I wanted to, I could try to see my regular GP in the morning and repeat the sample. She was fairly adamant that I do not have an infection, however.

I'm worried that I'll manage to get to the GP and the same thing will happen. This has happened to me in the past where the initial test showed negative but only after weeks and sending away for results did they show a UTI.

Has anyone else been in this situation? What did you do? I'm very uncomfortable and haven't been able to sit still all night, let alone sleep.

My GP always sends the sample to the lab for testing, even if the dip test comes up negative in the surgery. I think there are different strains which only show up on the lab test. I'd see your GP today. Hope you feel better soon.

It's entirely possible that you have one. Studies have shown that a proportion of UTIs screen negative but are clinically significant. Especially since you're pregnant, if your symptoms persist I would push for treatment.

Was it just a quick dipstick that you did in the office? That is not conclusive of a UTI.

UTI tests don’t work - there’s loads of evidence for this. If you have symptoms you should be treated.

Thanks @sacrecoeur0712, I appreciate it.

@PhoenixBuchanan it was an out of hours GP at the hospital. I brought in my sample and gave it to the receptionist. I was called into the room a few minutes later and told that it was good news and I didn’t have an infection. I didn’t actually see the sample being tested but presumably it was a quick dipstick test.

Okay I have an appointment today but I’m nervous that the doctor is going to say the same thing. I’m so embarrassed about how upset I was when the other doctor told me that she wasn’t going to do anything. I hope that I can at least keep it together this time.

Also the previous doctor came out of the room and told my husband everything she had told me, even though I specifically said that I didn’t want him in the room with me. It’s not a big deal that he knows, but it did make me feel like she was bypassing the emotional woman to talk to the man. What if I didn’t want him to know what was discussed?

I would complain about that. No patient confidentiality there at all!

Just an update to say I tested positive for an infection this time and have been given antibiotics. Thanks to everyone for their support. I was really hesitant to see another doctor but I am glad that I did.

Several times now I've been to a midwife appointment and mentioned I suspect I have a UTI, I'm very familiar with the symptoms. Each time I've had no positive diagnosis, I'm starting to suspect that my UTI symptoms are just a normal symptom of pregnancy and nothing to worry about (to much information but it's the smell of my urine that makes me suspect an infection) anyone else agree?

Exactly in that situation at the moment. Two urine sample have come back clear.

A history of UTI's, kidney stones and reflux of the kidney.

In so much pain. No temperature but been taking paracetamol for the last 5 days. Doctor did give me antibiotics on Thursday but no help whatsoever.

Midwives now at a loss. In the waiting room now waiting for a scan on my kidney.

So annoying everyone is saying nothing is wrong when I am.close to tears in pain .

Hope you feel better OP X
