Is the gestational baby weight accurate?

Just had a scan at 36+6.
The sonographer took measurements of baby, she said baby was growing normally but when I compared his weight to the average weight babies should be at this time he seemed to be a little on the smaller side.
He weighed only 5lb 27..
I normally hear babies being 6lb at this stage ?
Is this reading accurate and if so will baby gain much weight from this stage onwards? I keep worrying myself 🙁

I’ve heard it can vary by 10-15%. From memory, my DTs were weighing around 4lbs each at 34/35 weeks, and they were born at 36+5 6.6lbs and 7.3lbs.

They’re classed as full term at 37 weeks, apparently the last few weeks is for gaining weight.

I had a growth scan at 38+1 and my baby was measuring at 6lb 9 which is the 15th centile for my BMI. My previous DC was 15th centile so they have no worries. I believe it is very personalised to you!

Not at all. One research study found that Mum’s were more accurate at guessing the weight of babies than sonographic results!

Was well out with both of mine. Number one estimated at 10lbs, was 7lbs 11 at 41 weeks; number 2 was apparently 8lbs at 36+5, was 6lbs 3oz when born at 37+2. They both had long legs which can skew measurement.

It’s not that accurate.

Also half of all babies are below the average size so that’s nothing to worry about! As long as the baby is growing at the right rate it’s fine. They will send you for extra scans if there’s any concern.

Sunshinegirl82 · 03/03/2019 13:11

I wouldn't worry, baby is clearly not at a weight that causes concern and there will always be babies that are bigger or smaller than average. They would absolutely have told you if they were concerned about growth.

My baby was measuring at 5lb 6 (I think) she was born 6 weeks early 4 days later at 6lb 11. Not that accurate at all!!!

zod1ac19 · 03/03/2019 13:13

No, really not that accurate. One of mine was predicted to be 10lbs, was 9lbs 1oz at term, one was predicted at 8lbs came out at 10lbs 2oz.

Yours is a healthy weight for gestation I really wouldn’t worry.

Wow can’t beleive how wrong they’ve gotten most of yours! Thank you ladies.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he actually came out so much bigger because I heard that happens too! And my bump isn’t so small, Just have to wait and see I guess!
