Inconclusive Early Scan

Hi all. I very recently found out I was pregnant, it was a total surprise! I went for an early private scan yesterday at what should have been 7w2d based on my LMP. I should add here that I do have irregular cycles which can range anything from 28-40 days long, however we only had sex twice (a few days apart) around the time of a ‘typical’ day 14 ovulation.

At the scan I was only measuring 6w0d, a gestational sac, yolk sac and fetal pole/embryo were all visualised but there was no heartbeat. The sonographer didn’t seem hopeful that it was a viable pregnancy based on my dates, and told me to go to my local EPU.

Has anyone else had this happen and seen a heartbeat at a later date? Should I write this pregnancy off as a loss or stay hopeful? I have plenty of symptoms and the nausea is getting worse each day.

I will be visiting the EPU next week for a follow up scan, but I feel so lost in the meantime and would love to hear anyone’s experience with this.

BTW: Gestational Sac (mean) measurement was 9.7mm and CRL was 4.7mm

Thanks for reading!

I’m no expert burn I would say stay hopeful. If you get you EPU to scanypu exactlyone week later I bet you will see a heartbeat. If you ovulate later than day 14 their Dates will be wrong. I ovulate on day 20 so I’m almost a week behind their calculator

Sleek can live up to 6 days in the right conditions !

Not to sure op, but my DM always told me HOPE for the best and expect the worst! I had a scan last week and there was nothing just a blob and a week later there was a baby with a heart beat! Fingers crossed your dates are just of or baby implanted late xxx

Thank you for your replies. I guess it's just a waiting game then, it's going to be a long few days!

I think it might just have been too early to see a heartbeat, OP. I'm surprised your sonographer didnt advise this...

I tried to book an early scan at 6 weeks and the clinic advised me to hold off until 8 weeks, as there would be much more to see and better chance of seeing a heartbeat. They said if I came in too early I might just give myself unnecessary anxiety due to lack of heartbeat, but its likely it's just too early to see.

Stay positive, OP.

HJWT · 01/03/2019 13:42

@Wedgiecar58 thats very true I would not have a private scan before 8 weeks.

Wedgiecar58 · 01/03/2019 13:47

@HJWT I'm glad I waited, because the sonographer put me back a few days, and I still saw lots.

I know if I had gone before and not seen anything I would have panicked.

OP - try to stay positive, I suspect your scan was just too early. Wishing you luck for the next scan, remember this might also be quite early to see anything - I'm sure they'll be able to advise you. xx

@Wedgiecar58 like i said I hd an early scan and was 5+3 it was internal though, going to pay for a private scan at 9 weeks, its a lot harder to see through the uterus the earlier you are x

Wedgiecar58 · 01/03/2019 14:05

@HJWT Mine was also internal, I do still think the earlier you go the less chances of seeing a heartbeat, at least thats what my clinic advised when I called them to book a private scan at 6 weeks, they said it was better to wait until 8 weeks at least.

My dd has a private scan like this, in fact, I started a very similar thread. She should have been 7 weeks and a bit but measured 6, a total of 10 days out. We did see a heartbeat but I was worried as she was so sure on dates and the date she got a bfp didn't make sense if she was only 6 weeks iyswim.
Anyway, all was good, she's now 15 weeks and baby had 'caught up' by 12 week scan (although due date was moved back 5 days).
