Pregnancy after severe preeclampsia

Hello - I’ve just found out I’m pregnant with DC2. DC1 was born in 2017 at 32 weeks after I developed preeclampsia at 27 weeks, that became severe.

I’m pretty apprehensive that it might happen again - I was really poorly, as was DC1. Have any of you ladies had experience of PE in a first pregnancy and have been pregnant again? Did you get PE again? Were you delivered early if you showed any signs of it coming back?

Any advice welcome!

Hi my first born was born at 31 weeks due to sudden eclampsia I took seizures and her to have emergency section. I then went on to have my daughter year and a half later I started getting high blood pressure around 28 weeks and she was delivered at 31 + 4. There was alot more monitoring with my daughter though. I am now 26 weeks with current baby and have been put on asprin and bp tablets from the beginning so far bp has been okay so hoping I can go longer I have had hosp apps every few weeks numerous scans and now my apps are once a week. I hope everything goes well for you xxx

I know a girl from work, she had preeclampsia with her first and had another one last year and everything was great! Try not to panic x

I had pre eclampsia with my first, emcs at 36+6. Didn't have it with my second but did have raised BP towards the end, Cs at 39+2 weeks for other reasons.

I had pre-eclampsia last year with DD, and now pregnant again. I was told by my consultant that it's rare to get it again if you are pregnant to the same man, percentage drops below 5% chance. My midwife told me the same thing.

Thanks ladies - this is really helpful and reassuring. I haven’t spoken to the midwife yet, but consultant told me last time to start on 75mg aspirin when I was to get pregnant again, so I have. Also on methyldopa. @Starsandthemoonx, did you develop PE after the raised blood pressure or were doctors nervous it was going to happen and delivered you?

The doctors thought it would happen as I have lupus (auto immune disease) which has been linked to pe. I'm sure I remember them saying the chances are a bit higher if your PE has happened before 32 weeks or something. I was getting checks regardless because of my illness but they never knew I had my illness when pregnant with my son x

Not me but my mum had it when she was pregnant but went on to have two more kids. It only affected her during the first pregnancy, the other two pregnancies were pre-eclampsia free...

I had severe Preclamsia with my son and almost died, he was born by emergency c section at 33 weeks.

In pregnant again now (just 5 weeks to go!), I've been monitored much more closely this time and so will you be.
I'm having scans every 2 weeks and from 28 weeks have had weekly blood pressure checks and urine dips.

Plus asprin from about 12 weeks to thin the blood.to prevent it happening again.

I've been terrified but I know the symptoms this time so if I get a bad headache I go to the doctors and get my BP checked.

You will be well looked after x

My first was an emergency c section because of pre eclasmpia and the good news is if the fathers the same, subsequent pregnancies are at lower risk. So my first was born at 35 weeks and I was monitored really closely with no 2 (was born at 37 weeks by planned section) but I was on the antenatal ward for 4 weeks prior to birth and no 3, they’ve got a planned section in for 39 weeks and loads of appointments and scans. Watch this space!

This is all really helpful - thank you so much. I guess I’ll just be in for additional monitoring, and fingers crossed this pregnancy is a bit more smooth sailing!

I had eclampsia with my first. I had 2 seizures and he was delivered by emergency c-section at 35 weeks. My second pregnancy was fine, I took low dose aspirin and had regular growth scans. He was born by elective c-section at 39 weeks. I'm now 38 weeks with DS3 and everything has been fine again. Good luck, I hope it's the same for you!
