i am not sure about this as i am on my first but they do say that each pregnancy and labour is different and that your body will deal with it the best it can

I've had 3 and first was fine, second much much shorter and easier - I knew what I was going to experience and I was much less worried
3rd much like 2nd but was induced 4 weeks early, once labour was established was just like 2nd

I'll be watching this thread with interest! My details are almost exactly the same as you sbm. My youngest is 8, first labour 18 hours, 2nd 3 hours. I was induced with DS2 and think I might be with this one too because it looks like it's going to be another big baby.

When are you due? I'm due in September.

lilibetpotter · 06/07/2007 13:43

All three of my labours wre different. The third was the longest and the best!!

Dd was about 5 hours.

Ds1 came in two hours and it was far too quick, ds2 was a more leisurley 7 hours

I remember the midwife saying to me that it was all nearly over and thinking 'you're joking, I've had babies before and I know it gets worse than this'

but she was right

My youngest is 8 and I've been thinking the same thing as you...

DS (now 13) was 32 hrs of labour, epidural and ventouse and all in all quite a tough one. DD1 was about 20 hrs (only 8 in the hosp) and I only had gas & air. I had an epesiotimy (sp?) with DS and tore with DD1 so I'm worried about tearing with this one. As far as I'm concerned, I'm much older now and anything could happen I'm just going to go with the flow as much as I can.

My main worry is the after pains as they were really bad with DD1 and I've heard they get much worse each time...

Hope it all goes well!

Number 3 is due in 9 days.. (hopefully sooner)
First was an elective section at 36weeks, second was VBAC 40+2weeks and 1hr established labour,(3cm dilated)+) (but contractions (mild) upto3cm dilated were 10hrs)

Eldest is 10yrs, youngest was 3yrs last month.

DS1 - horrid long and painful labour
DD - best by far short painfree enjoyable labour ever...honestly loved it!
DS2 - similar to DD but dragged on for longer and was bit more painful.

Afterpains with my third were horrendous...didn't really notice them that much with my 1st and 2nd.

KathH · 08/07/2007 18:09

dd1 - about 36 hrs and horrid - swore I'd never do it again - ever!

dd2 3 yrs later - about 6 hrs - thought it wasnt too terrible.

ds1 2 yrs after dd2 - about 1 1/2hr - waters broke, straight to hospital, gave birth with my trousers still round my ankles!

ds2 - 5 yrs after ds1 - about 1/2 hr! Went upstairs to tell dh that I thought I was having contractions, decided I needed to go to the loo first - out slid ds2's head!

goingfor3 · 08/07/2007 19:00

The after pains with DD2 were horrendus, I've been told they get worse each time which I'm really not looking forward too!

I expected 3rd birth to be quicker than the fairly quick 2nd, but it was more like 1st birth re time in labour, as I progressed more slowly.

That was partly because I was tired and low in iron. I could have had iron supplements in pregnancy but didn't want the possibility of being constipated, which iron can cause.
When I realised that progress was slow in labour, I made a conscious effort to be on my feet more esp in between contractions and move around a bit. I think that helped.

After pains were worst with #3 but only lasted for one evening and responded to drugs.

dejags · 08/07/2007 20:02

DS1 - labour 12 hours, I was totally out of it by the time he was born and I didn't even have any drugs. He was my biggest baby.

DS2 - born 3 years later - labour 4 hours. Fab experience!!! I was in total control and pain never got on top of me. He was a little smaller than DS1

DD - born 2.5 years after DS2 - labour 16 hours, the worst by far pain wise. I remained in control throughout though. She was also nearly 2lbs lighter than her brothers.

First, went on for days (was 6wks early), difficult presentation.

Second, contractions were strong so more painful than first as they gradually built up, but quicker and easier labour and recovery.

Third, same as with second. Much easier labour and birth and recovery.
