Can you call Midwife for this?

I’ve had spotting for a few days, had a bit heavier blood today but not period like. I had a private scan on Sunday and there was a heartbeat but the blood today (more than a spot) has really freaked me out. The midwife called me to arrange an appointment time for next week but in the mean time could I call tomorrow for advice? I called the EPU but they put me through the minors A&E who were baffled as to why they were speaking to me. Today I’ve had pains similar to the two MC’s I’ve had. My partner is suggesting another private scan but realistically we can’t afford to pay for a scan every week and if it’s a problem then surely the NHS will investigate it?

I'm so sorry you're going through this; it must be very stressful. How many weeks are you? Unfortunately in the early days there's not much anyone can do, which is probably why they've told you to wait a week and see. It must be so hard though.

I'm sorry you're going through this - the limbo is awful Sad.

As KateTTC123 said, if it's early they can only take a wait and see approach.

I would 100% phone the midwife for advice in the meanwhile, that's what she's there for lovely - anything to give you some general answers and support.

Call at 9am. They should be able to arrange an early ultrasound.

How far are you? You can self refer to EPU ring up again, say you want to self refer due to bleeding in early pregnancy they should book you in for a scan: I did this in my last pregnancy.

I had a lot of spotting in my last due to cervical erosion. (Linked to taking the pill for years!) so it could be something like that?so try not too worry!

Also mention two previous miscarriages too them.....

Just under 8 weeks from LMP but I think just under 7 based on ovulation date. We saw a heartbeat at the private scan but this bleeding and pain is terrifying me that there is something wrong. Im unsure whether to call EPU or my midwife as EPU we’re so unhelpful last time.

I suspect EPU were unhelpful, because, sadly, there’s nothing they can actually do. Sad
I hope time goes quickly and you get a bit further on with no more worry. It’s so difficult, I know.

Hi OP. I'm sorry you're experiencing this. I had this problem a few days ago and called my community midwife who was very helpful. She told me that because I'd only had a few spot of blood on wiping that I should monitor it and call back if it got worse. I understand how scared you must be.
I'd already arranged a private scan for today anyway (8 weeks today) so at least I'll know one way or another.
Hope the midwife can help you.

Good Luck @glitterandunicorns. No more blood this morning, I’ve tried to contact the midwife and I think will book another private scan. If I’m honest I had just expected more support from the NHS after two miscarriages and a history of gynaecological issues. In the grand scheme of things I can imagine women like me aren’t a priority so just thanking my lucky stars we can (at a push) pay for scans for reassurance. My partner is reassured by the fact that they aren’t concerned so maybe it is just me being incredibly anxious.

Good luck OP ThanksI had a MC at 12 weeks but went on to have 2 very anxious yet ultimately healthy pregnancies. Hope all goes well.xx

TerriB1984 · 21/02/2019 11:23

Unfortunately because MC is so common you need to have had 3 generally before they count it as recurring MC and start looking into any potential underlying causes which isn’t very helpful to those going through it I know. It is completely understandable that you are anxious with your history and recent spotting. I think anybody would be. Hopefully you manage to get some reassurance from another scan.

Darkstar4855 · 21/02/2019 13:05

Hope it’s good news for you, OP.

Sadly most EPUs have limited resources so once ectopic has been excluded they will not usually scan you unless bleeding is heavy.

I do sympathise because I had bleeding and pain from 5 weeks onwards last time. A scan at six weeks showed a viable pregnancy but the bleeding continued. EPU wouldn’t rescan me as there was nothing they could do but the wait until my 12 week scan was so hard that we eventually paid for a private scan at 9 weeks. Thankfully everything was ok.
