Abdominal or transvaginal ?

Hi all, I'm booked in for a scan on Tuesday after a couple of light bleeds, I'll be around 7 and a half weeks if my dates are right. Does anyone know if they'll do a transvaginal or abdominal scan, had anyone else had a scan at this stage who can tell me what they used ? I'm not bothered which one they done but I'm just curious and I'm wondering which one to expect. Thanks in advance X

I don’t think there is a set answer. It seems to depend on the hospital. Every time I’ve had an early scan it’s been vaginal. They’ve not even tried abdominal first but I know other people on here have had abdominal scans that early.

@TerriB1984 Thankyou ! I would expect them to just do a transvaginal at it's a guaranteed to give an accurate image whereas they might struggle with an abdominal one, thanks for answering x

I had one at eight weeks which was vaginal, but the doctor actually switched to abdominal to get a better view! It really just depends. A full bladder helps.

I went at 7 weeks and with a very full bladder they could see everything abdominally.

MonkeyToucher · 17/02/2019 14:50

Sorry to be blunt, but it also depends on your weight. At the clinic I went to they try abdominally first then move onto internal if they can’t get a good enough view. Was told by the sonographer the biggest factor was tummy fat!

@Cosmogirl86 ahhh interesting. I just assumed a vaginal one would be clearer at that stage ! X

@EggbertHeartsTina ahhh okay, I remember that from my first, I'll have a very big drink about an hour before hopefully they'll be able to see what's going on in there x

@MonkeyToucher I'm generally healthy and don't consider myself to be bigger than the average women but I definitely do have a pouch and a bigger stomach than before I did with my first ! Hopefully that won't cause any difficulties x

I had one at exactly ty same date and they just went vaginal - didn’t even attempt abdominal. I’m slim fwiw.

I had a scan at 6+6 on Wednesday and was expecting it to be a TV scan but the sonographer suggested trying TA first. I’d not prepped for it so had only had a couple of glasses of water and juice to drink and was nowhere near a full bladder. However, in spite of this, they were able to do the full scan and we got fabulous pictures of our twin pregnancy and also got to hear their heartbeats!!

emmagrace96 · 17/02/2019 15:03

@Melamine Thankyou x

@Rememberallball aw how lovely ! I'm hoping for a positive result for this scan. I've been very worried the past few days. I would think they would try abdominal first just because it seems like the easier option but also would think they would do vaginal as I thought that it was a clear picture ! Congratulations on your twins (?) X

I have a pouch and they preferred a vaginal scan. I don't mind one way or the other. It really does help to have a really full bladder. Set your alarm to pee two hours before and have a couple of glasses of water or tea afterwards.

emmagrace96 · 17/02/2019 15:05

@explodingkitten the scan is at 10:30 and I'm up at 8:00 taking my kitten to the vets so I'll start drinking some water when I get home from that just so I know my bladder will be full, Thankyou ! D

Yes, drink lots! I had abdominal at 6w and we found the hb straight away. I didn't drink enough at 9w and had to go transvaginal.

emmagrace96 · 17/02/2019 21:28

@GemmaJen yes, I would rather have a abdo but not really bothered if they have to be transvaginal, but I'll definitely make sure to drink lots before I go in. Thankyou ! X

For TV you need an empty bladder. I had a scan at 8 weeks and they went straight for TV. I'm not overweight. It was fine though. Think it depends on the hospital. TV is gold standard for early scans.

emmagrace96 · 18/02/2019 08:15

@eightoclock I'll have a big drink, I can also nip to the loo if they want to do transvaginal but probably can't down 3 cups of water if they want to do abdo. Thanks for the input x
