Medium Steak

Have bought two big juicy steaks from the local butcher for our Valentines dinner and have read lots of differing opinions on eating steak when pregnant. I'm usually a medium rare girl but willing to eat medium (this will be my first steak eaten during pregnancy and I'm 32 weeks!), will this be safe?

My midwife told me as long as the meat is sealed when cooked, then its absolutely fine to eat! Ive actually had my steak cooked medium rare with both pregnanies and been fine!

Well if you go by advice on NHS website it recommends all meat is thoroughly cooked through but I’m sure plenty of people probably have eaten steak medium. It’s about weighing up the risk and deciding if you are comfortable with it. Chances are you’ll be fine.

The risk is toxoplasmosis, which needs meat to be fully cooked to be killed. The risk of getting it is fairly low so its up to you, but I decided it wasn't worth it as it can cause all sorts of fetal abnormalities.

I haven't eaten steak while pregnant because I'm normally a rare/blue kind of girl and I can't bring myself to waste a steak by cooking it well done!
