Medical Management following MMC Not working...?

Went for a follow up scan on Monday to confirm no heartbeat. I opted for medical management and started taking the medication the same day. Apart from some dark brown spotting, nothing is happening. How normal is this? I need to get back to normal and am finding the waiting really hard. The leaflet says it can take up to 72 hours but I thought I would happen quicker and I really want to avoid surgical intervention.

Hi hun, sorry for your loss, it's heartbreaking isn't it. I opted for an ERPC as I didn't want to start bleeding home alone with my then small DD. To be honest with you, it was fine (I was knocked out), I bled for a few days (nothing major) and took it easy for a day or two. The hormone crash came about 4 days later and lasted a day.

Thanks for the response. I can see the benefits of an ERPC but I guess it just seems more real. It’s really helpful to hear that it was pretty straightforward and means I won’t be so anxious if I head down that route.
I’m sorry that you had to go through this process as well and hope things are currently working out for you xx

I opted for medical management the first time and I had to have it in hospital which was lucky because the first pessary didn’t work, second one caused me to massively haemorrhage and almost die. I needed an emergency ERPC and blood transfusion.

Opted for ERPC the second time, it’s much less traumatic.

I had the medical management pessary, it started working about 12 hours later. I only bled for a couple of days (measured 8w) and had minimal pain ( though I was given some strong painkillers if I needed them). I was given the choice to have it orally but was told the pessary can be more effective. I was also told that sometimes it takes 2 doses. Ring the EPU for advice if you're unsure. sorry you're going through this, MC is just so heartbreaking and emotionally exhausting x

Thanks Guys. They have since said it can take up to six days to work so I feel a bit like I’m in limbo. If I’m in this situation again I might have to opt for ERPC.
