Pain when sneezing??

I'm currently lying in bed and sneezed, when a massive pain shot up my side - almost as if as I doubled up a bit (my top half came maybe three inches off the bed) a knife stabbed me from the inside out. It's happened a couple times over the past few weeks but this was a really intense pain and I almost cried and now I just want to know if this is normal or not??
I'm 18+3 weeks if that makes any difference??

Yep, sounds normal to me. Everything is pulled tight already so when you sneeze and the muscles spasm, it hurts! Unfortunately, you may need to get used to it... Sad

shopaholics · 11/02/2019 19:22

As long as it's normal I can definitely get used to it, thank you!
I figured it probably wasn't a midwife question but I also didn't want to leave it when in case it means something bad is happening (I have really bad anxiety around this pregnancy after a loss last year).

I get this too don’t worry xx

Pull your knees up to your chest when you are going to sneeze. This is ligament pain the uterus expanding. I thought my ovaries were going to burst. It does pass.

Moonchild23 · 11/02/2019 20:38

I get this a lot too, if you bring your legs up before you sneeze you won’t feel any pain 😊

But you might fart Grin

Sorry to hear of your previous loss, OP Flowers

So sorry for your loss @shopaholics.

I had the same but since I've increased my yoga it's stopped happening. I've stopped getting other ligament pain too, so if highly recommend it.

shopaholics · 11/02/2019 23:32

Thank you @Moonchild23 I'll try that!
And @ChaosMoon I'll try some yoga to see if it works, are there any positions you could recommend?
Thank you everyone x

I get this too, I always curl up into a ball when I know I'm going to sneeze lol even if I'm standing up 😂

You're looking for positions that let you (gently) stretch out your abdomen. So various side stretches, cat cow, even warrior possess and certain lunges are good.

If you've never done any yoga before, a class is a good place to start, but I really like Sarah Beth yoga on you tube. She has a few good prenatal videos on there, and they're about 20 minutes long, so perfect for a daily practice.

shopaholics · 12/02/2019 09:24

@mommysharkdodo I think I might start doing that 😂😂
@ChaosMoon thank you! X

I had this too! Apparently as the uterus grows, the ligaments that attach it to the side of the abdomen are stretched. ... Sneezing and coughing can put more pressure on the ligament, causing a stabbing pain.

So its completely normal :)
