Otomize in pregnancy

I am nearly 40 weeks pregnant. I have had problems with my ears since about 5-6 weeks, mainly excess wax but also had ear infections (but no ear ache really)

Early on (maybe 12 weeks ish) I went to doctors and was prescribed Otomize. GP said it’s fine “because it’s topical”. I anxiously googled and read that it should be avoided in pregnancy unless considered essential as effects unknown.

I get that it’s not ethical to test drugs on pregnant women so the effects of lots of drugs are unknown. I therefore try to avoid drugs including paracetamol unless I feel I really need it.

I didn’t use the Otomize.

About a month ago, I went to the GP and he said I had an infection in right ear so prescribed flucloxacillin (a penicillin). He prescribed that as he wasn’t sure about the safety topical treatments but assured me that was fine.

I struggled a bit with the not more than two ours after food or one hour before food schedule so some days didn’t manage to take four so wasn’t sure whether they’d worked but didn’t have pain so was hard to tell.

Yesterday GP said I have ear infection (same infection or new, I don’t know but same ear) and prescribed Otomize. I did ask about safety during pregnancy and she read the info and said she thinks if it could be problematic that would be earlier in pregnancy when the fetus is still developing and should be fine now plus should only need to take it for 7 days.

I suppose the AIBU is is it reasonable to take this when I’m not sure of the safety and I’m not even in pain or anything?

Maybe it’s U to question the medical professionals!

I’m so close to my due date (10 Feb) so my thinking was I would just wait til I’ve had the baby as I seem to have had an ear infection all through anyway but I think I might be starting to get earache...

It would probably help if any of you had taken it during pregnancy and it was fine

I’ve decided to take it as my ear is feeling itchy and slightly painful

I am trusting the GP!
