I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.

Just been examined by doctor (don't we all love a speculum!). No sign of active bleeding. She's not worried. Just gotta hang around for another anti d injection then free to go.

So yes, sporadic bleeds seem to be a new added thing I get to enjoy in this pregnancy.

norbert23 · 22/02/2019 13:07

Poor you @eallison88 I hope you're home
Soon so that you can get some sleep or a bath or something. Glad all is good though.

@beforeihit30 that is really reassuring having someone say it officially, plus you can try and take your mind off work for the next three weeks which will help massively.
I made it to the doctors after telling them all about my endless diarrhoea and some bleeding over the phone. Nearly died when the phone gp said "I'll book you in with dr ginger biscuit at 11, as he's been looking after you" 🙄 but in the end it was fine. He was v smiley and gave me more cyclizine but suggested a lower dose or half a tablet at a time. He must have Friday "friyay!" Feels going on / be chirpy for the medical student sitting in with him but I don't care. I also put him off checking my bum which I really couldn't face and promised I'd be straight back if I had any more blood when wiping which thankfully he was ok with. I'm sure he wasn't dying to anyway!
On that lovely note, happy Friday! Hope everyone has a bette afternoon and we all manage a bath / nap / a bit of toast x

avacadooo · 22/02/2019 13:40

@norbert23 that made me laugh dr ginger biscuits 😂😂

@eallison88 god it's awful you just can't seem to get a break! Hoping it's the last time you have a bleed!

Wish me luck I can't brush my teeth but I'm about to go to the doctors and it's a new gp because mine has the audacity to go on holiday 😂
Here's hoping I get my sickline and drugs 🤞🤞🤞

Blii · 22/02/2019 13:45

Is anyone else wishing their life away?

I just want august here now, this lovely weather is making me think summer is here, but it’s only February! Urgh!
I feel bad wishing time would hurry because I’ll never get this time back with my boys, there’s so many things we could be doing.

On the plus side I’ve not spent any money since before Christmas, just usual bills that come out and I’ve not driven my car since before Christmas, saving on petrol. Silver lining Hmm hope it starts when I go to use it next.
I’m back to work next week. Just one day a week. I’m worried how I’m going cope with all my extra saliva and having to spit constantly. Wish me luck.

Can’t remeber who it was that mentioned the dark thoughts, but I just wanted to add that I’m sure we have all been there, it was my husband that mentioned it to me first. You will get through this.

norbert23 · 22/02/2019 14:26

Best of luck @avacadooo 😀

I'm also wishing the time away @Blii so you're not alone there, plus the guilt of having hag half term and done nothing special with my little girl has been a killer. She's had tons of fun at nursery but I really hoped I'd take her out somewhere (obviously this was a ridiculous idea!) x

Foreverblues · 22/02/2019 14:52

Hey reastie, I rang GP to book another midwife appointment and the receptionist couldn’t tell me if my midwife was around or not. A bit strange, I’ll try the community office. I defo think those days doing nothing help!!

Beforeihit30, no I only have the one little boy at the min so at least he is getting pox out the way I guess. Just hope he doesn’t get it again, my teacher friend has had it twice! GP said me & baby will be immune because I’ve had pox as a child so hoping that’s right!

Eal, that sounds so scary but glad all ok. Reduced movements scared me enough!! x

avacadooo · 22/02/2019 15:22

@Blii I'm counting down the days and also hoping mini Satan will come early to end this torture!! Luckily this is my first so I don't have to worry about kids but I feel rotten cause I have a hamster and he's going to be two in August which means he won't have left after that so I feel rotten cause he's the best pet ever.
I get emotional over it 😂

I survived the outing, the doctor was lovely (I think I'm just lucky) cause my normal one had left loads in my notes for her so getting signed off and more cyclizine wasn't a problem and she asked how my mh appointment went too!
Booked my whooping cough jag so feeling productive and went to Greggs for an oval bite. Then when I was waiting in boots for my prescription an old man came in and sat beside me and started coughing up flem with the dirtiest cough I've ever heard, I have no idea how I managed it but I did not spew!!! Feeling very sick now because of it, sounded like a nasty chest infection! I'm an awful person for boaking at his cough but I can't even blow my own nose without retching.

LucindaE · 22/02/2019 18:50

eallison I am so glad that the bleeding wasn't threatning. On kesostix, as there are still some hospitals that unfortunately go by ketones, though really they shouldn't, I never know what best to advise sufferers if they are going ot be turned away wihtout measurements of ketones.
Foreverblues Fortunately, most sufferers do get relief before or around that time, so don't question that you did indeed have Hyperemesis. Sorry to hear about chickenpox.
Reastie Congratulations on sewing that card.
BeforeIhit30 I am so glad that this thread has helped.
Bili That is a good way of looking at it - no expense. You can also pat yourself on the back for doing your bit to save the planet through no car use!
Norbert Piles is very common in pregnancy, especially with constipation. Might it be that? You will make it up to DD and she will have the priceless gift of a sibling.
Avocadoo Sorry about poor hamster's days drawing to a close.
Moonkid Silly me. How did I miss that? Ive added yours as the third set of twins on this thread at the moment. Really exciting.
Waves to Cataxi I hope you get something that suits you better. - and everyone.

Ok so far I think these tablets are doing wonders. Phernegen and Prochlorperazine. Both make me drowsy. So I'm sleeping away the days mostly. At least it's not making me sick.
I feel bad for DS though as I'm barely spending time with him. Luckily we've got the in laws here so they're all helping. DS loves playing with his uncle's.

Except now. He's coming over for cuddles.

Have been depressing myself looking up return of ms in third trimester and looks like it’s common to return along with food aversions. Anyone had/have this? I’m hoping for positivity that since mine has never gone away it won’t worsen. I can’t remember last time other than the last month I felt the least sick but the most physically tough (the latter was easy compared to the former). The heartburn made me feel worse but that was separate to aversions.

Dead sleeping time away is one way to make it pass quicker!

Avacadoo i don’t blame you with the coughing man. Things like that I really struggle with too.

I’ve been wishing time away since I got my bfp! This 9 months can’t go fast enough for me! Then, once I’m no longer pg I’ll probabky wish time went more slowly to make maternity leave seem longer!

eallison88 · 22/02/2019 20:02

lucinda it is a tricky one. Increasingly it seems more and more hospitals are abandoning the nonsense of ketones. In my experience tho (of my first pregnancy, and the first admission in this pregnancy), even arriving with a letter from my GP saying that my urine had 4+ ketones in wasn't enough - each time I had to provide a urine sample at the hospital. We just need all hospital policies to follow the flipping guidelines from the RCOG, which you really would think wouldn't be that hard!

I am exhausted this evening. It's the mental exhaustion I think that's got me today. Plus I've had over the "allowed" number of high blood sugar readings, so I've gotta get in touch withdiabetes midwife. The frustration is that its the same time every day (8-9houra after taking my steroids), no matter what I've eaten for lunch (even if it's been the perfect lunch). So I'm 95%sure it's a steroid spike (which is a known thing). However, I don't know if it is having an impact on baby; baby being exposed to high sugar levels is problematic. Is it still problematic when it's high sugar levels from steroids rather than foods? Dunno. So I need that clearing up. Cos clearly a high sugar level daily for 4 months isn't gonna be good for baby.

beforeihit30 · 22/02/2019 20:41

Blii we seem to be saving money too, it’s a handy bonus for shopping later down the line for baby stuff! No cost of commuting, and even though I bring in lunch, tea/coffee/snacks, I do buy the occasional lunch out or coffee from a cafe and such (especially when I travel for work, as we only get a relatively small amount reimbursed), so it all seems to be adding up!

Forever oh that’s good (that you’re immune), and hope you’re little one is okay with it and gets over it soon! My youngest got it on his eyelid Confused which apparently is risky and they need to keep an eye in case it actually affects the eye, so we were given antibiotics and such.

To people wishing their time away, I feel similarly. I’m really hoping I perk up enough to do house organising before baby comes (I’ve given up on returning to work, I’m hoping it does happen but I’ve massively lowered my expectations in the last week alone). That could be any time before, it doesn’t have to be now. But I’m so itching to do it now! I can’t even do a load of washing without retching so I’m going to have to wait this one out for a bit methinks...

I’m planning on starting my mat leave at the beginning of August but have a load of annual leave to take (and ideally need to take prior to mat leave in line with company policy, otherwise I’d have way too much leave accrued on my return), which I want to take in July, so basically finishing at the end of June. That means from now I have 4 months left at work, and I’m going nowhere fast, so if/when I do return I don’t feel like I’ll be there for very long. Going to have to gave that conversation with my boss at some point!

cattaxi · 22/02/2019 20:59

Thanks for all the advice about ketostix. I don’t think I’ll bother. The cyclezine is definitely helping me stay hydrated. And I think I’d know the signs of dehydration well enough to go get checked if I felt I needed to.
I think I’m panicking about things just getting worse & worse as I get towards weeks 9/13, which were my peak last time.

I’m also with those of you who feel like a bad parent. I’ve barely done anything with DS the past 2 weeks. He was so excited this morning when he realised it was Friday as that’s my none working day and we usually do something fun after his morning at school. So, today I skipped the cyclezine and hardly ate so that I could potter with him without being drowsy or constantly sick. I almost threw up at the school gate, but got away with it. We had lots of fun playing you trains and we even got outside for a bit. I’m massively paying for it now though with major nausea & exhaustion. The thought of struggling this much for months on end is so depressing.

DeadDoorpost · 22/02/2019 21:09

reastie with my last HG pregnancy the sickness came back but it wasn't too bad. As for aversions, I don't really know as I had so many during it that I lost track.

Foreverblues · 22/02/2019 22:29

Beforeihit30, my little man got it on his eyelids too! As soon as I saw it I booked another GP appointment, but they said it wasn’t bad enough to need anti viral and will go away on its own. I was worried because I get coldsores on my eyelids so know how dangerous it is. He’s had the pox just about everywhere but seems to be recovering quickly thank goodness!

Thanks Lucinda, feeling so lucky. Just hoping to recoup some energy for the birth tbh! x

eallison88 · 23/02/2019 04:55

Another day another bleed... back to triage I go!

With regards to hyperemesis returning... it certainly did for me. I mean, it never really went away, but got infinitely better wk20ish to 32ish. Then week 35 it all tanked again. Never s bad as the first few months, not even close, but certainly got a little debilitating again.

evuscha · 23/02/2019 07:19

Yes to wishing my life away Sad I'm also starting to come to terms with the fact that I'm stuck with this until the end. Week 18 and still feeling sick every day unable to do much - so much for the "oh don't worry you will feel great in the 2nd trimester" Hmm It's extra frustrating when the weather is nice outside.
I had what I thought some sort of recovery in the last few weeks, just feeling nauseous in the mornings (sometimes throwing up but mostly not even that) and although still exhausted during the day, I could eat reasonably well, go for a walk or meet a friend nearby. GP kept pushing to try and stop taking cyclizine, so last week I did a couple of days with just 1 pill per day - it didn't feel right so I quickly went back to my usual. However it was enough to ruin the balance I guess, and last night I met friends for dinner, had some plain chicken and vegetables (sort of stuff that usually works well) and at the end of the evening I suddenly became so sick that I barely made it to the loo and threw up every single bite. Threw up several times at home again and had a shitty night, probably bed bound for all of today too Sad I'm so exhausted by this all, I really thought I have turned the corner and maybe I could just do one cyclizine per day and that's it, but apparently not. Now I have to justify myself in front of the GP again.

Here is hoping everyone feels a bit better this weekend Flowers

LaceyB1995 · 23/02/2019 09:11

Hi all,

Sorry I haven’t been active this week been quite poorly. Need a little advice as I’m not sure how I go about this!

I’m dehydrated, and I think quite badly. Dry mouth, lips and skin, dizziness, not able to stand for long, weakness,a bit out of it in general, headache, low blood pressure and only went for a wee twice yesterday. Anyway so I know I need IV fluids, but how do I go about getting them?

Do I call 111?

I physically can’t sit in A&E for 6+ hours on metal chairs, I can’t even sit upright at the moment. Also been told I have SPD this week so it’s really going well Sad

I don’t have a number for my midwives just an emergency number which is for bleeding, contractions ect and all the doctors are shut today!

How did everyone get the IV fluids they needed?

Hope everyone is as well as you can be!

cattaxi · 23/02/2019 10:07

Oh @LaceyB1995, that sounds tough & it does sound like you need fluids.
Have you got an out of hours GP service, I think they may be able to admit you, rather than going through a&e. They did for my son once.
Whatever you do, I hope you get seen ASAP x

Reastie · 23/02/2019 10:08

Lacey I think it depends on your area, some hospitals have a specific hg suite. Maybe have a google and see if that’s the case for you and you could ring them? Otherwise I’d personally call the hospital of emergency line as if they coukdnt help you’d think they would know where to direct you (and if that’s a&e). If you can’t cope with a&e maybe try another hospital if you have another near you. They might be different. Or ask at a&e if you can wait somewhere separate to the main waiting room, they might have a hallway with chairs you can lie on a bit more peacefully (that sounds really unimpressive as a good option but something like that would make it a little easier for me). Hope you get sorted, feel for you.

Evu how annoying to have a gp obsessed with cutting down your meds.

Eal oh no to another bleed, they’ll know you very well at the hospital!

How depressing it might return in third trimester. I’m struggling enough now!

After two good days and feeling so pleased I’d had a bit of rest from nausea today is a rubbish day, feeling awful. Dd wants to play with me and is really disappointed. She’s been so good about it but said to me today ‘you’re always sleeping’ as I’m always in bed! It’s her family birthday party tomorrow, tbh I can’t wait to get it done! Need to have a bm today and my usual helpful morning one hasn’t happened, so that’s really contributing to feeling sick but just a case of waiting for my body to decide to do it’s work. Hurry up!

eallison88 · 23/02/2019 10:46

lacey does your hospital have an early pregnancy unit or equivalent? If not, I'd call your emergency number for bleeds etc - they'll either be able to help, or direct you to help. Totally understand wanting to avoid A&E!!

Onlyinanemergency · 23/02/2019 10:50

Well after two days of full on constant vomiting my pregnancy sickness has reverted to mild nausea. I'm absolutely terrified something has gone wrong. It's very early days - I'm only 4 and a bit weeks - so I know there's nothing I can do. The hospital have offered me an early scan next week but I think it would be too early to see anything at 5 weeks either way. Feeling very depressed today.

eallison88 · 23/02/2019 10:51

It's an ectropian bleed. Common cause of bleeding in later stages of pregnancy. Usually caused by sex (ha! Last week's doctor also said that frankly it could be a vigorous sneeze! I can assure you that it was more likely a vigorous sneeze than a vigorous anything else!). The frustrating thing for me is cos of my blood type (rhesus neg) I have to go in with any bleed as I will need an anti d jab just in case.

We got home at 9am, had breakfast, and I'm just crawling back into bed now for a few hours.

LaceyB1995 · 23/02/2019 11:03

Thank you all, I’ll give the out of hours a call later on, find myself being really stubborn and just thinking I can resolve it myself. But also thinking I don’t want any harm to come to the baby either I’m not sure what’s making me feel so stubborn about not going, I think it’s the idea of feeling weak or giving in it being judged I don’t know.

They do have an early pregnancy unit at my hospital but I’m 18 +1 now so not sure if I can go there?
