Almost free NCT classes

I'm surprised so many people don't realise that they can get up to 90% off the classic NCT class depending on their circumstances.

Admittedly it's not that easy to find out from their website (I had to hunt for the link even though I knew it was there).

Here is the key info

"Reductions of 90%
Reductions of 90% off the course price are available for:
• Under 18s
• Students under 22 years of age
• Parents receiving Universal Credit, income support, income-based job seekers allowance, income related employment and support allowance, working tax credit or support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
• Parents with a yearly combined household income of less than £16,190
Reductions of between 10% and 80%
Parents with a yearly combined household income of £16,190 - £28,190 (level depends on your household income)
Payment by instalments
Everyone can pay for a course by agreed instalments as long as the final payment is made 30 days before the course starts."

I just thought I'd share incase any new parents would like to learn more but didn't think they could afford it.

It has its uses, from practical to social but mostly I think it's a nice time to focus on what's coming and find a mini support group going through the same new parents ups and downs (those first few weeks can be lovely, scary, emotional and will be exhausting) it's nice to chat to someone living it at the same time.

I guess I posted this at the wrong time or nobody is interested. Smile

Thanks OP. I haven't really looked at NCT classes yet but we fall into the income bracket for the 10-80% reduction so could be handy.

ColdCottage · 07/02/2019 17:49

@Triskaidekaphilia oh good. If it helps 1 person realise they can access this regardless of budget I'm pleased.

They really need to update their website. I contacted the local rep as I claim income based ESA. She told me that they don’t actually give the discount based on that Hmm I ended up giving details of my income and got the 80% discount instead.

That would be very useful for many people where I live considering it's a very poor area.... It's a shame NCT aren't interested in our money though, nearest NCT classes and groups and the other side of the city, in the nice affluent areas. Would have been 2 buses for me to get there when I was pregnant.

Good advice though OP if they're near you.

ColdCottage · 09/02/2019 08:41

@FormerlyFrikadela01 that's a real shame. Have you emailed them to ask about classes in you area (no good for you now I assume) as I'm sure the teachers are still paid fully via the charity.

Is the NCT worth it? I've just enquired about antenatal course. It's not local, it's about 40min away by train. I'm debating the journey may not be worth the hassle!

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 09/02/2019 09:59

I did NCT with my first and even with 90% off I wouldn't bother again.

It really wasn't worth the hassle.

EssentialHummus · 09/02/2019 10:08

cosmo I only found it useful for making local friends, so in your circumstances it doesn’t seem useful.

ColdCottage · 10/02/2019 08:50

I agree the local social group of parental peers is the main benefit for most.

I also think it would be good if they focused more on those first 4 weeks after birth and let people know it's hard and not all fun.
