Brown discharge

Im 8 weeks pregnant today and for the last 2 days I've been having brown discharge (like you get at the end of a period) but only when wiping after I've been to the toilet.

I've been told that it's old blood and not to worry but after a miscarriage last October I'm freaking out and feeling like it might happen again.

Has anyone had this and everything been ok?

I've booked myself in for a private scan tonight at 8pm as the hospital only want to see me if it's red fresh blood or the brown gets heavier.

I had this at the same time as you, and I was concerned but not concerned enough to go to the hospital. It was just in the back of my mind a lot. I had it for about a week, maybe just over. It changed in how much there was aswell, there was quite a bit at some points. I booked myself in for a private scan at 8w5d and baby was perfectly fine. Heart was beating away and it was wriggling like crazy. Perfect size, we were only out by a day based on the measurement. Definitely go for the scan, I have seen some women post bad news after having brown discharge but not many. Also, to make you feel better, the place where I went for the private scan is run by midwives and they also work at the hospital I will be giving birth at. She said as long as there’s a heartbeat at 8 weeks, the baby has the same chance of survival as it does at 12 weeks. There’s only a 2% chance of anything going wrong, and that will be all the way through your pregnancy. I have been a lot less stressed since my early scan! Got my 12 week one today too, even though I’m 13 weeks tomorrow. Hope it all goes well for you! Good Luck.

Brown discharge is so common in pregnancy in both successes and losses, it's easy to link back to it as a symptom after a miscarriage when looking for causes. I had it every 2 weeks or so until 12 weeks and I'm now 25 weeks, only ever on wipe, not enough for a liner. At 8 weeks it's likely to be the placenta starting to implant in the uterus.
Never ignore your gut instinct and call gp or midwife if you're worried.

Hi,

I had brown spotting with both my pregnancies around 7/8 weeks. First pregnancy have a dear son and 2nd pregnancy am now 33 weeks!

Even with my second pregnancy getting it again, I still worried myself silly.

Fingers crossed its ok for you

Thanks everyone. I get myself so worried about everything at this stage. My first pregnancy was a breeze until about 30 weeks when I got gestational hypertension but I never had any problems in the start. Hopefully it'll all be fine. I'll let you know how my scan is later 😊 thanks again. X
