Hi. I'm 28 weeks pregnant and just went to the loo. As I sat down I felt some pressure and at first thought the baby's head was coming out!I think it was my uterus-it was clearly visible and protruding. Is this normal? Was it just the way I was sitting? This is my second pregnancy and I don't remember this before. Sorry to be so graphic but this has worried me a little.

vaginal varices? Get it checked out.

What's that?

varicose veins in the vagina/labia. They can look quite distressing if you've never heard of them. Relatively common in pregnancy (especially subsequent pregnancies), but no one ever talks about them. Caused by the pressure of the baby on the blood circulation.

You should speak to your midwife to find out what's going on.

Im not seeing my MW for another 2 weeks. Can it wait until then or is it something I should be concerned about?

Can you phone your midwife? If you thought it was your uterus, then you need to make sure it wasn't.

suspect belgo's right. I'd defn talk to your mw in the morning and get an earlier appt to be certain through.

not normal, per se , but not terrible! you should be checked out ASAP, might be a prolapse, or varicosities....definitely need to be checked

'think' the medical term is vaginal varicosities. if you do a google search you should get some info. i had them last time and this time- not a lot you can do but they do seem strange! from my basic anatomy knowledge don't think it could possibly be your uterus. some books suggest a sanitary pad with tight fitting pants but cannot believe this would help in any way. it did not affect me at all and they disappear afterwards no problem.

Going to be graphic again so excuse me. I could see inside with a mirror underneath and what was protruding was about 3 inches wide! Think I'll give midwives at hospital a ring and see what they say. Thanks everyone for your help. I'll let you know what they say.

apparently varicosities can look a bit like a bunch of grapes, but i've never seen them.
