Hello everyone

I’ve just had my long awaited BFP this morning after sadly miscarrying last year. To say I’m over the moon would be an understatement!

As you can imagine I’m very anxious and I’m booked to have my hair dyed today.

Could anyone one tell me if it’s ok to have it done in the first trimester? I’ve tried googling it but keep getting conflicting information

Thank you!

I'm not sure what the actual recommendations are but I had my hair bleached, drank and sunbathed while pregnant (I had no idea I was pregnant until 8 weeks) baby is fine is is due in the next few weeks.

Iv always dyed/bleached mine throughout my pregnancy's

Hedgehogblues · 02/02/2019 09:04

The NHS website says it's fine

MuchTooTired · 02/02/2019 09:07

Congratulations on your BFP!

I had my hair highlighted through my twin pregnancy, but I did wait until I was out of the first trimester due to anxiety - like you I read stacks of conflicting advice. They’re ivf babies, so personally I decided against it because of this, but I know loads of people who dyed their hair throughout, and who didn’t dye their hair at all. I appreciate this isn’t much help...!

Thank you all for your replies!

As you can imagine I’m incredibly anxious so I’m just trying to do everything ‘right’ if that makes sense. I’m just so scared of something going wrong. Maybe I’ll wait until I see the midwife, even though I’m sure she’ll say it’s fine.

Oh god how I love anxiety!

I got told by my hairdresser that it's fine to have it dyed/highlighted once your out of the first trimester. Personally I left my hair alone. I always dyed my hair but I never had it coloured when I was pregnant but that's my personal preference I didn't mind waiting. But maybe wait until after the first trimester, but again that's what I've been informed and told but everyone's different.

My hairdresser and midwife said it was fine but I decided to wait until the end of first trimester more for my own anxiety than anything else

Glitterandunicorns · 02/02/2019 09:18

My midwife and hairdresser both said it's fine. My hairdresser said that from what she understood, any risks with dye are due to colouring or bleaching in a confined space, but in a salon you should be fine.

Because of this, I bleached my hair throughout my first pregnancy and everything was fine. The only thing to be aware of is that your scalp/ skin may react differently due to the hormones, so perhaps it's worth getting a patch test done again, even if you've already had one in the past.

Thank you for your replies you’ve all been so helpful.

My problem is that I’m going grey and I have dark hair which makes it more noticeable. Obviously the safety of the baby is more important though.

I may have to just try and rock the silver fox look for a few months haha

Yes you can have it dyed but better if it's not on the scalp so highlights would be better than all over bleach

They may need to do a patch test to check you're not reacting to it as you can become allergic to things your normally ok with during pregnancy

Omzlas · 02/02/2019 10:23

I believe the 'concern' is more that your hair changes during pregnancy and it won't necessarily dye as it would when you're not pregnant. My hair was thick and shiny and lush when I was pregnant. But would it take dye? Would it bollocks. It grew super fast too so my greys grew through much quicker

Health wise, it's fine as your body doesn't absorb the dye, only your hair does.

bunty19 · 02/02/2019 10:44

I too have dark hair but am going grey. First trimester I used one of the root touch up sprays - I think it was a L'Oréal one and it worked brilliantly to tide me over until I felt happy to have it coloured properly again at 12 weeks. Might be worth a try? X

PhoebeBear · 02/02/2019 12:06

I'll be out of my first trimester in 2 days (yippee) and last night I bleached my own hair with a few highlights at the front. I heard it's okay as long as it's not onto the roots.. I never touch the roots anyways to give a ombré effect

Clementine19 · 02/02/2019 12:55

I’m fair anyway, but I have mine highlighted every couple of months. The bleach doesn’t touch the scalp.

Birchgirl · 02/02/2019 19:38

I’m a dark brown colour and going grey so highlights wouldn’t be possible.

You read my mind bunty15 I used some today and it worked a treat

Thank you all for your advice Smile

My hairdresser refused to dye mine when I said I was first trimester but was happy to highlight. She said it was probably safe for baby though there is conflicting evidence, but also your scalp can be a lot more sensitive so I was more likely to have an allergic reaction. Highlights are just painted on and don’t touch the scalp hence she thought it was fine.
