4.8mm NT result at first scan

Hi all,

I had my 12 week scan yesterday and it showed I was further along which was great. So 13 weeks tomorrow. But when they did the scan they found the fluid at the back of the baby's neck to be measuring 4.8mm. I got offered a screening test so I accepted. Today I had my blood results and it came back high risk with a chance of Down’s, Edwards and Patau.

So me and my husband decided to opt for the CVS testing for an accurate result. I now have an appointment Monday morning at 9am to get this done. Scared yes but I know it needs to be done.

Has anyone else had anything like this and what was the outcome like? We have a daughter already who's healthy no issues.
I'm just feeling drained and my positivity is disappearing.

Thank you

How old are you? The odds are affected by your age . It did happen to me at 37.

B0bb · 01/02/2019 15:34

@hendricksy I'm 28. So I don't know if that's good or bad?

I'm not either to be honest . Just be aware that the cvs doesn't pick up all genetic issues . Have they said the baby has any other markers for issues ?

B0bb · 01/02/2019 15:49

@hendricksy no the sonography never mentioned anything else, just the fluid at the back of the neck. It kept wriggling all over the place. I presume everything else was fine. Just feel like a grey cloud is over us at the moment Sad

This happened to my sister in law and they had the further testing and it was negative and now has a healthy baby. Fingers crossed for you

hendricksy · 01/02/2019 15:54

They will do a more detailed scan when they do the cvs ..I know someone who had a 6 Mm nuchal food and is fine . My son only had a 3.2 but wasn't fine .. just make sure you get all the Info before you make a decision . As I said above the cvs doesn't pick up everything . Tests are better now , make sure you ask for the full screening and genetic tests . ( micro array )

B0bb · 01/02/2019 16:01

@Willow4987 thank you. I've read stories online and there are so many positive stories ones with 7mm. I just hope we are one of them! But I know what will be will be.

@hendricksy I'm sorry to hear that. I know I will do as much as I can. Funnily I'm suppose to start my new job Monday and luckily they have been really supportive with what's going on. I just hope next week we get some good news. I had a MMC last year and I thought that was bad enough

It's ok , he is 7 and loves life , he has learning difficulties but it is what it is ... it wasn't made clear to us that although he didn't have patau/ downs / Edwards it's possible he may have something else so I wanted you to be informed ( I know it's scary ) .. when have you got your CvS ?

B0bb · 01/02/2019 16:11

@hendricksy that's lovely.. I know I will do as much as I can. I'm trying to be positive but it is hard. Especially now you have seen them on screen, but I know if it was the worst situation I would have to terminate. We already have a family and we have decided what's best for us

@hendricksy sorry it's Monday my test... quite scared

I'm sure you are ☹️... it's over fairly quickly . The waiting is the hardest . Get a good load of books and box sets .

B0bb · 01/02/2019 16:22

@hendricksy I have my 'bones' programme on ready Smile. I just don't want to go through it but I know I have to face reality and pray and do what's needed

Hi - very similar story for me, I was 28 - NT was 4.7mm - we came back 1 in 84 chance (no family history) we decided to get CVS - after a stressful few weeks everything came back clear. Our boy was born a week ago and he is perfect.

Take it really easy the day after the CVS — it was scary but not as bad as I thought it would be. Felt like I’d done a lot of sit ups. No bleeding.

We were told that CVS testing is very comprehensive. After 5 days we received a call to say he didn’t have Edwards, downs or Pataus (sp??) then another 5 days or so to say he had no genetic abnormalities. I still received extra scans at the hospital despite the negative result and it felt like they were very conscientious.

Thinking of you and hoping you also have the same result 💐

angel0071987 · 01/02/2019 16:33

Just to say thinking of you.
Back in September we had this situation. I had the bloods and they came back all normal and low risk. We opted to have the csv testing but my placenta was too far back to reach. We tried weekly until 16weeks (1day off) when we were then going to get the amnio instead. Unfortunately by then there was no heartbeat so had to be induced. Turns out our DD has turners syndrome and we were apparently "lucky" to make it that far.
Thinking of you at this stressful and worrying time Thanks

B0bb · 01/02/2019 16:38

@le42 wow that's such a positive story. It made me feel a lot better. Our results today were 1 in 150 chance of these.

Congratulations on your safe arrival, it's nice to hear you had a lovely outcome. I'm praying and carrying crystals around with me that everything does work out but when you keep getting hit with negative outcomes it gets hard and you feel drained.

I know ours is a boy I could just tell yesterday.. it seems to be fairly common with boys? I hear so many with them?

I really hope I have a good outcome but I am facing that reality that if worst comes to worst then I've just got to do it.

Thank you though it's made me smile Thanks

@angel0071987 thank you for sharing that. I appreciate how hard it is to share these stories.

Thank you for your kind words I just hope next week our cloud lifts but we will see

1 in 150 is less than 1%.

Does that help? Looking at it that way always helped me. To be blunt your risk of miscarriage at this point is higher than the risk of there being a problem.

Your odds are still very low: IMO the NHS really overreacts with these things.

magpie24 · 01/02/2019 16:44

A friend had a 1 in 5 chance of downs and she was 32 at the time. CVS confirmed no downs syndrome.

B0bb · 01/02/2019 16:45

@ricepolo wow ok that makes you look at things differently doesn't it.

I know they do. To he fair I was a little pissed off when the specialist said today 'you will be surprised when some of these cv tests come back and everything is normal'...

Oh thanks just scare me to death after enjoying the near 3 months and then tell me you get surprised by these results

@b0BB- it’s such an awful time I really feel for you — I was frantically looking for success stories so I’m so glad I could share ours with you. There’s no advice I can give other than try to focus on nice times with your family to distract yourself ❤️❤️❤️ Please let us know how you get on

B0bb · 01/02/2019 16:46

@magpie24 .. wow ok. Well mine today was 1 in 150, then she mentioned 1 in 5 and then it was a 1.3 ratio Hmm.

Means nothing to me... just know I'm high risk for the 3 screenings

I had a CVS.We had counciling before. The procedure is painless, full bladder needed. The scan detail is much better that the normal ones.
I think I got the results over the phone after 2weeks and I was told the babies sex.Our result was OK.Good luck.

ineedmoresleepnow · 01/02/2019 16:55

Hi. I had exactly the same measurements at my scan and was referred for a CVS. The experience at the scan was awful - they actually said to me that they would not book my 20 week scan as I probably wouldn't need it.
I had to drive 2 hours away for my CVS and the unit there was fab. CVS is fine, doesn't hurt though is wierd. Got the all clear two days later and then had two subsequent heart scans at the 2 hour away hospital. They were clear too (and amazing).
To be honest I found it all really hard as they never found anything wrong but always caveated that with 'but that doesn't mean anything isn't wrong'. However she is now a perfectly healthy, energic and bright 3 year old and has had no issues at all.
I never went back to the original hospital after that first scan though, all further appointments were at the 2 hour away one and I was eventually signed off for a home birth.
Good luck for Monday, will keep everything crossed for you

B0bb · 01/02/2019 16:55

@Hotterthanahotthing that's lovely news.. I think the wait and the result will be the worst. I may faint on the phone lol!
