Can eat subway if pregnant?

CRAVING a Subway sandwich, but am wary about it due to lunch meats (and salad) being on the don't list for risk of listeria.
any advice?

It’s fine; unless it’s on the nhs list I’d eat it otherwise you’ll find you’re not eating anything.
Nhs says be careful with cold cured meats so avoid those but ham, chicken etc is fine

PRoseLegend · 01/02/2019 11:46

I ate lunch meat in pregnancy, but usually I heated it up.
You should be fine as long as you get your sub toasted.
And just make sure the subway you go to has good hygiene.
Any sign of gastro, go to the doctor immediately.
Definitely don't eat any lunch meat that's been left out of a fridge, or that is getting a bit old.

pandechocolate · 01/02/2019 11:47

I have eaten them and I'm fine.

Josico58 · 01/02/2019 12:00

I've eaten subway salads loads and been fine

SpottedTiger · 01/02/2019 12:02

I've had a few, never crossed my mind.

LiquoricePickle · 01/02/2019 12:05

I always ask them to double cook the meat, or go for tuna.

Bunnybaubles · 01/02/2019 12:38

I have subways all the time, in this pregnancy and my last. Usually have either steak and cheese or meatballs and I've never had a problem. I didn't realise it was an issue??

Karigan195 · 01/02/2019 12:46

Ha first pregnancy I scoffed so many subways I’m surprised I didn’t look like one! This time I can’t stop thinking I want a Big Mac. Something I haven’t eaten in about 7 years! Not exactly a healthy choice for the baby so I’m resisting but a subway can actually have salad on it :)

Teakind · 01/02/2019 13:04

Personally I don’t as I worry about the listeria risk from the salad. Also I don’t like how the meat sits there for hours and isn’t sealed. I love them when I’m not pregnant though.

I realise I’m probably very OTT though

It didn't even occur to me I couldn't! After every hospital appointment and scan I've had a subway as there's one in the hospital Grin

hammeringinmyhead · 01/02/2019 14:33

I wouldn't, but only because I have had food poisoning from a branch in Bristol!

Babyno2mamabear · 01/02/2019 14:37

I used to work in subway and the meat arrives frozen - advice for cured meats is either to eat cooked or you can have if it has been frozen before and it has. The subway I worked in was always 5* hygiene but obviously check the one you go to. This would be as much a risk as eating out anywhere though. Salad is also all washed before prep and the meat discarded after 6 hours of being opened. The counters are all chilled. Xx

My only thought would be that 'heated by Subway standards is usually luke warm so doesn't really count. Although the reality is I've eaten mostly what I fancy in pregnancy (including Subways although I generally get chicken) but tried to follow the NHS advice and completely avoided pate and alcohol. The risk of food poisoning off things we eat all the time is pretty low.

notangelinajolie · 01/02/2019 21:16

Just avoid the usual food they tell you not to eat during pregnancy.

There is a Subway in my hospital. You can't miss it it's right in front of you in the main entrance. It wouldn't be there if it was bad food.

PRoseLegend · 02/02/2019 00:22

@CrabbyPatty
Realistically the only high risk things are alcohol and smoking, as they have been proven to cause significant developmental damage to unborn children.

With improving hygiene standards, the risk of listeria is now quite low with lunch meat.
Even "mould ripened cheese" is safe to eat if it's come from the UK or Australia and has been pasteurised.

spudlet7 · 02/02/2019 00:41

I'm sure it's fine as a one-off but I wouldn't make a habit of it. Not because of listeria in particular but because it's fast food and low quality/full of crap. The bread has some weird chemical in it if I remember rightly.

Whammy · 02/02/2019 01:37

I had a massive craving for subway in my first pregnancy - was probably having it for lunch 4 or 5 times a week! No problems here.

halfwitpicker · 02/02/2019 01:40

Should be fine.
