Citalopram whilst pregnant?

I'm having a really hard time at the minute coping with my emotions.
I was previously coming off of my anxiety tablets of 10mg of citalopram before I became pregnant but stopped when I found out I was pregnant. I'm feeling these old anxious worries coming back, struggling with sleep, feeling sorry for others witnessing my constant down days and not understanding why I'm feeling like this!?! So emotional too!
I know there are some side effects to taking this but I just don't know what else to do :( has anyone else taken these whilst pregnant?

I'm sorry you're having such a tough time. I'm on sertraline which is the normal one recommended in pregnancy. Would that be an option?

I stayed on it throughout my pregnancy (and years after), I figured it was a better option for my baby than having a seriously depressed mum. It was 16 years ago and the advice then was that it was safe to take during pregnancy, but unknown if safe while breastfeeding... I don't know if this advice has changed since. I was on the max dosage of 40mg when I found out I was pregnant, and then lowered it to 20mg and stayed on that

I am on 20mg of citalopram, and it's all been totally ok'd by my doctor for me to stay on it and also breastfeed whilst taking it. I spoke to my GP about the guilt I was feeling for being on the tablets, and she said it is SO much more common than you think, and there are actually women out there who have to take a lot more 'risky' medications when pregnant.

Happy mum = happy baby Thanks

I'm 20 weeks and on citalopram 10. My GP, midwife and consultant have all said not to change a thing as it works so well for me. I suffer from general anxiety and this just seems to stop the worries escalating. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks for your advice. I spoke to the doctor and have been put on 10mg dose of Citalopram again, hopefully this will improve my mood, help me sleep and enjoy my pregnancy a bit more ☺️.
However reading through the possible side effects for baby on the leaflet is making me anxious, but surly they wouldn't put people on them if it was that bad?!

I'm on 20mg as it was the right thing for me. I'm currently 39 weeks pregnant and things have gone smoothly. 10mg is a very low dose and the risks are low. A mummy who is poorly and depressed could have worse outcomes so look after yourself. Xx

I was on 10mg during my first pregnancy and 20mg throughout this one.... both times it’s been ok with GP, midwife and consultant.
