Any midwives around? I have a question about Iron Tablets

I am 37 weeks and have just been prescribed iron tablets as my hb dropped to about 9. I'm veggie also. I'm worried about getting my levels up by the time i go into labour, had bad haemorrage last time. I feel absolutely terrible and i cannot even imagine being able to tollerate the exhaustion of labour feeling this bad. I have been to Holland and Barratts today to enquire about Floradix and Spatone as a few people on here have reccommended it, they were a bit unsure about taking it without speaking to a midwife so I was just wondering if its safe to take my iron tablets as well as either of these to try and get my levels up in the time i have left. I am trying so hard with my nutrition and eating properly but it doesnt seem to be helping. Thanks

I am not a midwife, so sorry for being the first to reply, and probably the least helpful... I took Floradix (tablets) instead of iron tablets and I felt better within about 2 days, they made a real difference. Bear in mind people in Holland and Barrett would never say a definate yes or no to something as everyone is worried about being sued these days.
Hope you feel better soon and get the answers you need x

not a midwife eitehr, but spatone is fine to take, with iron tablets, AFAIK!

and dark green leafy veg, dark chocolate, apricots, and no tea and coffee

taking spatone with orange juice will help too

Spatone was fantastic! It made me feel great & when I told my MW about how easy it was to take, she arranged for me to get it on prescription!

Another vote for Spatone.

By far your best bet is to check it out with your pharmacist - they are usually the fountain of knowledge when it comes to 'mixing' meds.

spatone or floradix..i`m veggie too and have always ahd lowish iron levels..the irontablets prescribed by the drs were useless for me as my body wouldnt absorb them but i take spatone regularly and it always helps ..try taking two sachets a day to help boost iron levels though..i wish i could get them on prescription though as they are expensive compared to others

thanks everyone. Sorry to some posters - i know you posted on my other thread too! You must think i'm obsessed with this! I'm just so desperate to feel better. maybe a chat with the pharmasist might help then, i just dont want to overdose on iron (if this is possible)! As i noticed the spatone was the 100% rda needed. How long do u think the iron tablets would need to work before i noticed an improvement?

I took floradix when i was pg with my dd, and it def worked. We were in germany at the time and my Dr checked my iron levels every time. It definately dipped when i had been forgetting to take it, but I knew it was absorbing when I did remember to take it. Good luck!!
