First Trimester spotting - what's normal?

Hi there,

I'm currently going out of my mind as I've been experiencing 'spotting' for almost a week and google is doing nothing to reassure me!

I went to the docs last Wednesday after discovering bright red blood after using the loo - he sent me to the Early Pregnancy Unit to check the viability of the pregnancy (at this point, after dating the first day of my last period, etc. it was assumed I was around 7 weeks pregnant.) The scan showed that in fact I was around 5 weeks and 5 days pregnant, we saw a strong heartbeat and that there was a small bleed by the yolk sac. The midwife advised that once this bleed passes it's very likely I'll see some more spotting, but not to be concerned unless it turned bright red and I had heavy cramping.

I've bled every day since, it's heaviest each morning, but continues intermittently throughout the day (especially after a bowel movement - sorry!) it's most of brown, but can have tinges of pink. I'm not experiencing any severe cramping but, I just feel like a week is an awfully long time, especially as the midwife emphasised how small and insignificant this tear by the yolk sac was.

I had absolutely no bleeding in my first pregnancy, so I can't help but feel like I'm just waiting for the inevitability of a miscarriage. Please help!

I just want to say that I had spotting every day like your describing - mainly brown but sometimes pink, three times red with clots.
No reason was ever found. It eventually stopped around 11 weeks and I’m now 21 weeks pregnant. Hang in there... it’s just an anxious wait really with every day praying it stops Flowers xx
