34 weeks measuring small

Just been for a midwife checkup and she said baby is measuring small and she’s sending me for a scan tonight. She’s told me not to worry so of course I’m going out of my mind stressing. Anyone any experience with this? Second baby, didn’t have this with the first and he was born 8

@Chunk9 I had this throughout my 3rd trimester and ended up having 3 growth scans, all of which showed that while she wasn't ever going to be a huge baby, her growth was normal. At 39 weeks my bump was measuring 31cm, but DD was born at 39+6 weighing 6lbs8. I just had a small bump!

Celebelly · 29/01/2019 12:18

Fundal height measurements are so inaccurate. My chart looks like a rollercoaster as my fundal height has borne basically no resemblance to the baby's measurements at growth scans, so it's just all over the place. I wouldn't worry!

All pregnancys are different so one persons experience might not be another's but I was measuring 4 weeks small at 36 weeks (second full term PG) and has a 9 pound baby at term.

Bump measurement is a very crude tool. Even scans can be way off.

Have the scan and put your mind at rest. I assume you've been feeling movement and heart rate was fine?

Chunk9 · 29/01/2019 12:26

Can’t help panicking. I’m sure it’ll be fine. 2 losses between this and the last pregnancy, I’ve been nervous the whole time and have only just let myself switch off and get excited, now this. I’m 34 and she said she measured 29?

Ah op I think this is really common! I'd say about half my ante natal group went through this! Try not to worry xx

Dimsumlosesum · 29/01/2019 12:28

Don't worry, it's usually absolutely nothing - mine all "measured" weird sizes but came put totally different weights! (Healthily, I mean). Same for my sil, my five friends, my mum etc. Its easy to say, but try not to worry too much xx

@Chunk9
I had this in my first pregnancy, midwife was very concerned as my bump was measuring smaller than previous appt - booked urgent scan for following day.
The scan was fine, said he was on the smaller side but would be still be around 7lbs at birth, I eventually had a 9lb baby on my due date!!
Its worrying but I think in the third trimester its not as much of a concern, so many factor can impact bump size, like baby position etc.
Try not to worry, when is scan?

Tonight at 17:40. Least not long to wait

The tape measure test really irritates me, it's so inaccurate and causes so much stress and panic when there's no need. Happened to me last time and I was sick with worry for the week they took to give me an appointment.
Also just happened to DHs work colleague who has had multiple losses and she was out of her mind.
Both absolutely fine and the sonographers in both cases gave a huge eye roll.
I know you'll worry anyway but try to stay calm, I'm sure you'll be absolutely fine Flowers

I was lucky as I was getting regular scans anyway, but towards the end the midwife did say there had been zero growth since my last midwife appointment according to her measurements. Luckily I’d had a scan a few days prior which showed perfect growth so she wasn’t bothered.

ChoccyBiccyTastic · 29/01/2019 12:41

Had this with 2 out of 3 of mine. I was referred to the OB/GYN for growth scans but never got them, as the doc was happy. Is the midwife measuring right down to your pubic bone? Mine is very low down, almost at the cross seam of my jeans when sitting. Midwives tended not to go low enough when measuring.

ItsMEhooray · 29/01/2019 13:24

Btw, even though it will almost certainly be fine, 34 weeks isn't like a really dangerous time for baby to come out, it's not ideal but they will be ok

Catscakeandchocolate · 29/01/2019 13:26

At 39 weeks the midwife told me I was measuring 34 weeks. DD arrived 4 days later on the 80th centile! Wait for the actual scan and try not to worry. The tape measure with the midwife doesnt factor in fluid, how you carry, your body etc.

Chunk9 · 29/01/2019 16:19

Can’t thank you enough for all your reassurance. Hour and a half until the scan, just trying to calm down with a drink. I feel sick x

How did it go Chunk?

Dimsumlosesum · 29/01/2019 18:14

Hope you're ok OP xx

Chunk9 · 29/01/2019 19:11

Hey all. Went fine. She’s just lay really awkwardly. Happy with measurements and work her out to be about 5lb 1. I’m so relieved but it’s knocked my confidence! Can’t wait until she’s born safe now!!! Thank you all again for the support, it’s been a long afternoon stressing x

That's a great weight. So pleased it worked out and good luck for the fun to come

Ambs81 · 29/01/2019 20:38

@Chunk9 that's great news x

lmj25 · 29/01/2019 20:48

I had a 6lb at 41 weeks and was sent for growth scans in my 2nd pregnancy due to the 1st, was then induced at 38 weeks +1 due to him measuring small and blood flow to the brain(can't remember correct was all very rushed). However he was born 3 hours after being induced at 6lb6 when they measured him at 5lb10. They can be quite off from my experience hope all goes well x
