Peppermint tea - safe to drink?

I’ve just read that peppermint tea might not be safe to drink during pregnancy as it may relax the uterine lining. I’d read previously that it is good for morning sickness so I’ve been having a cup a day but now I’m panicking as a few websites mentioned miscarriage. Maybe I’m just googling too much! What are people’s experiences with drinking peppermint or other herbal teas?

Oh really? I've never heard that before.
I have bad IBS and peppermint tea is one of the few things I can still take (most of my medication is not suitable for pregnancy). My IBS got really bad in for a while and I spoke with both doctors and midwives about drinking it. Not one person told me it wasn't suitable.
I'm just over 34 weeks now Smile

I have never heard that before. Anecdotal, but I drank loads and loads of it during both pregnancies and had no issues. Both the teabag kind at home and it was also my non-alcoholic drink of choice when out in cafes/bars with lots of fresh mint in. I'm sure it's recommended for morning sickness?

I drank it a lot when I was pregnant and am currently breastfeeding my 3 month old so all good here. I did ask my midwife about it though and she said the amount you would have to drink for it to do anything would be so much that it would make you sick first and over a long period of time

I've been drinking it all the way through my pregnancy to replace my old coffee drinking habit.
I'd imagine if you Google enough you'll find everything will cause miscarriage, there's a lot of fearmongering out there. Better stick to NHS guidelines and published studies for advice.

Oh great, I feel a lot better guys, thank you so much! I’ve been worrying myself sick half the night, I think after suffering a loss my minds gone into overdrive!

I love peppermint tea. You're meant to drink herbal or decaf teas when pregnant.

Wouldn't it be better to google some research rather than ask what are likely to be unqualified people? A cursory look online suggests it's safe.

The only thing I discovered is that some herbal teas (all my favourites...) contain liquorice root, which the NHS doesn't recommend.

If it doesn't have any ingredients on the NHS list, it's fine.

Peppermint tea is pretty much the only thing I drank when pregnant

I would go by the NHS website which says drink in moderation, no more than 4 cups a day so you’re fine. If you look hard enough on the internet you’ll find that anything and everything in pregnancy is considered dangerous. I stick to the NHS as I have confidence they’ll have reviewed research properly whereas other websites not so much

Thanks for all your replies guys, its reassured me that other ladies have drunk it without any ill effects. Now to stop googling every little thing!
