Question about vitamins

Hi everyone, I have a strange question (probably a silly one) about vitamins. I'm 6 weeks pregnant for the second time, I lost my first pregnancy last October at 9 weeks, so I'm a bit nervous the whole thing. I know to avoid Vit A but can I take too many multi vitamins? Like can I have a berocca type drink and my pregnancy vitamins? I suffer from SAD so take vit D in the winter and worry too much is too much. Sorry for the daft question but I can't really find anything about this.

It is possible to take too much of certain minerals such as iron. Though afaik it would probably make you feel ill/constipated before it harmed you. It can be harmful for children - not sure about pregnancy.

The majority of vitamins eg vitamin C you just wee out if you take too much. Your body doesn't build them up. So if you take a multivitamin with 100% of your recommended vitamin C and then a berocca, it's probably just a waste of money rather than dangerous.

(Not a medical professional, so people should correct me if I'm wrong.)

Thanks @Topofthehills for the advice - really helpful and reassuring!! My iron supplements say to take twice the amount but I'm still only taking one at the moment - cause I'm so early so hopefully thats ok.

Happy to wee out the excess haha - but pleased its probably not dangerous.

You NEED vitamin D during pregnancy and breastfeeding which is why it's included. Are you taking another dose of the recommended dose? If so that should be absolutely fine. As long as the multi vitamins are pregnancy ones, crack on.

And congratulations btw. I understand how stressful it can be, being pregnant after a loss Thanks

Hi @Thingersandfumbs - I take my usual Vit D supplements but I know this is also included in the pregnancy multis. I really struggle without the extra Vit D in winter so I'm hoping I don't have to cut this out (but will of course)

Thanks v much - we still can't believe it happened again so quickly. I can't wait to get the first scan out of the way and then hopefully chill and enjoy the pregnancy a bit more.

Congratulations!

Definitely check with the midwife at your first appointment if you're unsure.

@hereandtherenow it says on the pack of berocca not to take if pregnant - not sure if that’s because of the stimulants in them but I’ve stayed away just to be on the safe side :)

Oh crap does it??? Can't believe I missed that. The ones I take are a supermarket brand so I'll double double check tonight. Thanks so much for the heads up!! X
